Interesting blurb in this week's Air et Cosmos about the Qatar A350 and 773ER order.

It basically says the only reason that Qatar didn't announce the A350/777 order at the Dubai show was simply for the lack of media coverage as their deal would have been overshadowed by the Emirates 777 order.

That could make sense. Given QR intend to be the "cornerstone" A350 Launch Customer with an order for 60, in addition to ordering 20 777s, the PR value for them will be substantial when they finalise their orders. Given the media seemingly focus on Airbus and Boeing going head to head an announcement like this could well have played against them as the OEM order totals seem to "steal the headlines" and EK opened the show with their announcement.

Wait a week or two and QR can have far more media coverage, which they'll need, given that their going head to head against EK which is a formidable challenge in it's own right.

One would think 60+20 would be a big enough order. But the issue might be the relative size of the 777 orders as they will have an impact on fleets much sooner than the A350, given its EIS is only in 2010.

It all sounds a bit childish!

Maybe it's Qatar, not Virgin, that should have the decal on the back of its aircraft, "mine is bigger than yours"!
