T2 seems to be in a holding pattern right now. After 9/11, its opening was put on hold indefinitely. Whenever you drive by, it looks like the have the ticket counter area nearly/almost finished and the exterior airside looks relatively complete with the exception of not having any jetways (They rebuilt the ramp a few years ago).
Then, when Virgin America announced that it would have a significant presence at SFO, the airport sold them on T2. T2 was then supposed to be VA's terminal. Now, with VA seemingly up in the air (figuratively and not literally), T2 seems to be indefinately going nowhere.

The little finger that AA occupies is a real time warp. All the gate signage is vintage 1980 from when the terminal opened - I checked the manufacturer plates! I don't think it's ever been remodeled.
It does have a nice (if small) Admiral's Club... that would be an awesome US Airways Club if U could get their hands on that concourse
Sadly, I think HP/US is gonna be stuck in their little 1970s-vintage rotunda in T1... the airport's really itching for US and YX to get out of their nearly-deserted concourse so the blocked International Terminal gates can be opened.
SFO is really pathetic for such a major airport... all the domestic gate areas seem to be to be either horribly cramped, terribly outdated or both.

Actually the United concourses are good. They are spacious, new concessions, flat-panel displays, etc. The rest of the terminal space however I do agree with you. The AA gates are probably the worse espceially when they are crowded.
Yes, T2 was going to be AA's new home during the dot.com explosion of the late 90's/early 00's. Obviously that was either shevled or postponed. Virgin? Who knows. Personally I would like the to see T2 become a oneworld terminal (AA, BA, CX, JL, QF). I believe there are customs and immigration set-ups as this used to be the international terminal. Just a thought.

Other than domestic AA operations, all of OneWorld is in the A concourse of the new International Terminal. There is no chance of T2 serving international airlines again.

If my memory serves me correctly, T2 was also remodeled to accomodate more aircraft. It used to only hold 9-10 aircraft when it was the international terminal (for heavies) and upon reopening, I believe the terminal should be able to accomodate closer to 14 aircraft.

T2 was the original terminal, later central terminal, at SFO, it at one time (prior to T3 being built in the late 70's) had three concourses, two occupied by United, and the other by PSA, Hughes Airwest, National and Northwest Orient. The international concourse then was the rotunda deal in T1 currently occupied by US and Midwest. The rotunda is oddly matched to the rest of the concourse, as it was the first step in a cxld remodel job on the entire airport in the very early 70's, that would have seen more of the same type of rotundas built in all three terminals.
I have heard in a post on this site that US is consolidating in the old HP gates in T1 after the holidays, and that Midwest will move too, and that concourse will be torn down finally, so that the international terminal will operate at full tilt as designed. I also believe the former customs and immigration facilities in T2 are gone, or will be gone, replaced by domestic luggage claim facilities. Another possibility for that space would be to consolidate NW, DL and CO there for Sky Team, and move AA into the DL/NW space (where they once had a concourse prior to the opening of the T3 or what was then called the north terminal).
With SFO, however, anything is possible when it comes to terminal facilities...
