Someone sent me this from an ownership database

Boeing 747-400 PW4056 N178UA 24385 1990 VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS 64408 8067 9/30/2005 In Service

Now by which obscure means could a UA 747 belong to Verizon?

What now?

That may be the case, where an owner leases an aircraft to a carrier. I checked the FAA registry database myself for 178UA and found it's controlled (not necessarily owned) by Wilmington Trust Co. - Trustee. It's not uncommon for the owner to use, or establish, a trustee to manage the aircraft or it's lease.
To check the FAA registry, use this link:

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

The company that provided the capital to purchase the plane was probably Verizon Capital (owned by Verizon Communications), Wilmington Trust Co is just the trustee (they are handling the deal).

I've seen Verizon named in serveral of the Delta Chapter 11 lease rejections as well.

You guys might remember a few months back Disney was suing United for back payments related to several B757s.

Its not unusual for non aviation companies to take part in investments in aircraft. They usually do this for the tax benefits (large depreciation charges).
