The New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority has revealed Qantas New Zealand (Jetconnect) allows its passengers to use their cellphones during flight. Qantas also allows all its passengers on all its flights (international, australian domestic etc) to use their cellphones in-flight. The CAA has not received a request from QF to allow its passengers to use their cellphones in-flight

NZ is in the process of getting permission on all its flight to/from and within New Zealand from the CAA.

I'm sure that's very usefull when flying over the Pacific...

I'd rather die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not terrified and screaming, like his passengers

A bit of clarification is needed to the original post here. Qantas allows passengers to use their mobile phones in Flight Mode in flight. That is, the transmitter is deactivated, but you can still use the applications on the phone (basically making it a PDA). This flight mode is common on many higher end phones available today.

On domestic flights in Australia, you are also allowed to make calls while on the ground until the door is closed when departing, and when advised after vacating the runway on landing.

But they do ask that they be turned off for take off and landing. Their announcement, on a recent flight, before closing the door was that phones were to be turned off for take-off, and if passengers intended to use them in Flight Mode, to activate this setting before turning the phone off, so that it would be preset when the phone was turned on again.

This was for both a LHR-SYD and SYD-CBR flights in October.

Recall that SK does something similar.

Open comment to all airlines.
Please never allow phones to be used in flight as there is always some loudmouth who thinks he/she has to shout into his/ her phone to be heard, this was evident on a QF flight that was delayed on landing in SYD last week, Crew announced phones could be used and it was pure bedlam. If they want people to use phones in flight issue all seats with seat phones and let them pay, you can bet then that the cabin will be as it should be - free of insesant chatter and shouting.

thank god i was not born a bird. this type of flying is much better

In seat phones are very restrictive. If they were made with the GSM system in mind, and a passenger could insert their SIM or RUIM into the phone and use it for roaming calls and SMS, it would be great.

In other words the original post is pointless. A phone/PDA in "flight mode" is a regular electronic device which is allowed on all airlines with certain restrictions (takeoff and landing).

As far as my PDA phone is concerned there is no other option than to put it into flight mode. It is not possible to switch it off completely.

Thank you VirginFlyer for making that clear to everyone. I have to admit, I'm always very glad of the strict mobile regulations we have in Australia. I flew Virgin Blue for the first time last month, and I was impressed that they would not even let you use your phone until you were well inside the terminal, owing to the fact that they were refuelling the aircraft while pax disembarked.

We don't need mobile phones on planes.
