A friend of mine said he saw 2 SWA flights land at ABE on Friday 11/25 and Saturday 11/26. He said one was from MDW and the other from MEM. There are no Southwest services at ABE normally. Could someone explain why this ocurred. Thanks for any help.

It probably was a charter flight (sports or otherwise) of some sort. That would be my first guess. Either that or both flights may have landed there as a result of a diversion (weather or otherwise). Again, just a guess.

Sports might be the answer. WN was at ROA recently for the same reason.

The fact that one was coming from MEM (another city not currently served by SWA) pretty much gives it away as a charter flight, and the other was also likely one. In the fall, if it's a Fri/Sat/Sun and you see a SWA 737 someplace you don't normally see one, it's most likely a charter.

As far as diversions go, if we have to divert a PHL flight, they usually go to either PIT or BWI, and once in awhile, MDT or ACY. A diversion into ABE would be a rare thing.

Not really any sports of any significance in the Lehigh Valley. No professional sports at all, and as for D1 colleges just Lehigh and Lafayette Universities... but I doubt they're attracting anyone from MEM and probably not from MDW. Surely Kutztown, Muhlenburg, and other D2 or smaller schools aren't attracting that either. Nearby East Stroudsburg Univ. is in the D2 NCAA football playoffs, but I believe their opponent was from upstate NY, an easy drive.

I saw them on Flightaware and Flytecomm and just assumed charters. IIRC, they had 9xxx flight #'s. Don't ask me who needs a 737 for a charter here in the Lehigh Valley though that wouldn't just drive it down to PHL/EWR.

Let's start the rumor mill: The flights were bringing SWA management up to talk to Mr. Doughty about their new ABE-DAL service, on discarded Comair CRJ's.

Just FYI, 9000-series flight numbers were used for charters, but the numbering system was revamped when the ATA codeshare started (our system and their system had to jibe). 9000-series flights are now used for "stubbed" flights or ones with flight numbers that conflict with other airlines.

I guess WN is still singing that song that Herb wrote about "We will not fly to ABE." Anybody still have the lyrics?

I think that was a Dr. Seuss version of a letter, versus a song.

I'll see if I can find it...

Here it ls:

Hey a fellow Lehigh Valley A.netter. Howdy!

I knew there was a reason I didn't like Southwest. hahaha. Hell, I still lived across the state then, and Pittsburgh was still the US hub back then. As a matter of fact, I flew my first ever non-USAirways flight about the same week that Herb sent that letter to my current home... and now I try to avoid US metal as much as possible. Times have changed my friends, times have changed.

Looks like the flight came in late on a Saturday from TRI, and then left for BWI afterwards (returning to a BWI quasi-hub). Flightaware wouldn't let me go back any further than that. Looking back in TRI's arrivals there was an arrival from BWI prior to that flight TRI-ABE, must have been to ferry the plane in.

I've been told Lafayette University had a playoff football game in North Carolina, and TRI is on the border. Upon research it was in Boone, NC, which is relatively near TRI, though it seems as if Winston Salem would have been an easier commute from the airport looking at Mapquest. I'm assuming this is it though. Thanks to my email helper.

OPNL Guy: Thanks loads! I noticed that they left out the "will not fly to ABE", I guess on the basis that the reader wouldn't know what ABE was...

I'm sure with every 45-minute (or more) taxi wait down at PHL, Herb thinks back to that song... because those waits "don't fit the business model."

They were routed there.
