Major Success for Tupolev 204C
A major development is underway with the Tupolev 204C being seriously considered by TNT Airways as the replacement freighter for the ageing B727 fleet.
Over the past month TNT have been evaluating the TU204 on its major routes and initial results have indicated that the aircraft has performed beyond the criteria TNT has set down. The aircraft taking part in the program is powered by Perm Engines and is the first of three aircraft being acquired by the AirRep Group based at London Gatwick airport.
Since its introduction the aircraft has quickly made a reputation for its reliability and ease of operation. AirRep managing director, Colin Martin is extremely pleased with the results. "A major hurdle has now been overcome which will ensure the feasibility of the TU204 within the western airline industry. Those involved in the design, manufacture and power plants can take pride in the operation of this aircraft. The future can be assured as more operators are taking a keen interest in the aircraft. TNT is looking at a number of different options. They need to replace a number of aircraft because of noise requirements due soon in Europe. I think it would be a real eye opener for Boeing and Airbus if Tupolev were to win a contract of size.
In the long run it could mean even increased competition in the passenger end of things as well. Increased competition could/should result in even lower purchase prices for airlines and leasing companies.
It took the Russians(et al) a little longer to wake from their communist induced sleep but I am afraid that the great Russian Bear may be slowly awakening and both Boeing and Airbus should take heed.

All I can say is, BRAVO TNT!!! It's about time someone gave Russian planes a chance. Now, all that will have to happen is for Tupolev to be able to complete the necessary party of jetliners on time and have them provide reliable service for a few years. Then, people will start to pay attention!
I have to say I am amazed that TNT wants the TU204 with the PS90AP engines. There is no support network for those engines worldwide, and their past reliability is shoddy at best. I hope Perm/Soloviev has addressed these issues.
Anyway, it makes me GLAD to see things like this. Russia needs hope for its industries and economic well-being!

I think something's happening/happened already that needs a closer look:
Air Rep have no use for the Tu-204 for their operations.
Their main role is to provide emergency heavy airlift capability at short notice with global reach. Most of the places they need to operate have no prepared runways which explains the dominance of Russian/Ukrainian types in their fleet such as the An-12, 26 and Il-76.
You can't drive a tank into a Tu-204, fly it to Mozambique, land on mud, and drive it out again...
I'm thinking.... Maybe TNT looked at all of the options and decided to take a very close look at the Tu-204 (or maybe AirRep management sold them the idea).
But WAIT! We can't have TNT's shareholders knowing that their company is operating INFERIOR SOVIET equipment.
So AirRep and TNT make a deal so the type can be operated and evaluated but never has to be 'officially' in the fleet or purchased by such a large and reputable company.
There are major west-european airlines that use Russian cargo aircraft, but because we have to be ashamed about these things, they are operated by 3rd companies with no reference to the western airline.
Who/What provided most of the airlift capacity for Britain's intervention in Sierra Leone in the last few months?
All those An-124's based in London.. but did they ever tell anyone directly? We can't have the public knowing that the Soviets have a more capable product than we do.
So getting back to my point.. I think that TNT have already decided that they want it and this is a 'backdoor' for them to operate and evaluate the Tu-204. Once that's been done successfully for a while, they can slowly break the news and it wont be such a shock.
Long live Tupolev! This is the best hope they have for getting 'mainstream' recognition. If TNT decide to place a large order, the floodgates will open.

I think TNT is going the right way. To my best knowledge the TU-204 already flies with with RRs and western avionics and THERE ARE maintenance facilities for that. LH Cargo once looked on this plane, too, and they said when it looses some structual weight it is really an option worth to be considered. Don´t forget that this buddy is close to the 752, a very good plane!
