748 A Twin? Can It Compete With A380?

The latest renderings show then 748 as a TWIN (!). Can it still compete as a twin? Are there any engines big enough to power it? I've also heard there's some issues with nosegear strength? As I understand it, the nose gear isn't strong enough, leading to failures. Will they repair this?

Uhh you would need an engine that would probably produce about 150,000 to 165,000 lbs of thrust per engine. No engine can currently do it though I think GE is trying to up the thrust rating on the GE 90s to 125k.

Would you really need an engine of that size? I'd have assumed a small engine should suffice. Maybe a turboprop, at a pinch?

KLM certainly seems to think so, since they ordered it:

I always wondered what a 747 would look like as a twin. Kow I know. Thanks for posting!

I'm sure Boeing thought about it, but it would probably cost too much money at this point in time...

I like the photo though.. thumbsup
