The end of an era... the last US Airways flights left the former PSA rotunda at SFO's Terminal 1 on Wednesday. As of yesterday, US (and Midwest Airlines) have moved their operations to America West's five-gate rotunda in Terminal 1.
Now SFO can finally do what they've been wanting to do for years... demolish that nearly-vacant wing and open up the blocked International Terminal gates. Still, another piece of California aviation history is going, going, gone...

I can't believe it took the HP-US merger to do it. Not like there was a shortage of gates seeing as how the entire former intl. terminal sits empty.

The former International Terminal is indefinitely closed. US Airways wasn't exactly in the position of being able to fork over a bunch of cash to renovate and open new gates in a closed terminal.

Thanks goodness. Sorry but it was an eye-sore and now 3 more Int'l gates will be available.

OMG
How sad. Indeed the end of an era. Gosh I remember as a kid going there like once a month when it was PSA as my parents came and went or would pick someone up. I remember USAIR has the lone gate the third one over on the left where there like 3 daily 727 flights to PIT would come and go from. Up in the actual rotunda you had Continental and AIr Canada as well. It wasn't uncommon for CO to have a DC-10 and AIrbus 300 parked there as well as MD-80, 727s and 737s for Houston, Denver and New Orleans. AFter like 5pm in the evening this terminal was packed. Even after the USAIR/PSA merger it was hustle bustle, everything just became USAIR and then Piedmont moved over as well. I have to say with all the high frequency of flights w/ PSA/USAIR merged and the jumbos w/ CO and Air Canda, this was probably one of the busiest terminals in all of SFO. I guess the last 10 years this terminal has been pretty quiet.

How many gates will the new HP/US have in the T1 rotunda?

Wow. That has to be a stretch for a 727 distance wise (at least westbound).

Byrd, they've got six gates in that rotunda... Every time I've flown HP out of SFO they've always had that whole 26-27-28-29-30-31 area to themselves but they only ever used two of them that I saw.
HP isn't showing on SFO's online arrivals/departures system but I see the US flights using 28 and 30, with the lone Midwest flight at 26. I've boarded at 29 before, so they're using at least four.

Looks like it's going to leave a lot of empty space. Will the 3 Int'l gates use it all, or perhaps remote stands or something?

HP didn't always have a five gate rotunda. I believe that rotunda has a total of six gates, but ATA was using at least two of those gates until pretty recently. I think HP was only using two of the gates a couple of years ago and then added a third gate when they stated their SFO-BOS/JFK transcon a year or two ago. The ATA scale down at SFO pretty much made available that whole rotunda to HP/US.

HP/US are using Gates 26-30 until the end of January when ATA will supposedly turn over Gate 31 to HP/US.

Blantantecho: Once torn down and resurfaced it will open Int'l gates 1/3/5 for use. When I was at SFO they said it will take some time to do all of that. Also, they were in talk of a blast fence between A-1 and Alaska's gate 20 so planes would not have to pust back the length of the terminal.
Tropicbird, that what I have heard. Looks like ATA will use only gate 25. Funny that not to long ago they were flying to 6 destinations!

Interesting how they built the new terminal right up against the old terminal and didn't knock it down then. I wonder why they couldn't entice US to move to different gates.

I was just at SFO yesterday in the US terminal, they own gates 1-17. Are they getting more gates now or are they relocating to a different terminal?

No worries. I only know because I fly HP pretty frequently and I used to see the ATA flights to HNL and MDW depart right across the way.

I once was told that when the Terminal One rotunda (former South Terminal) first opened in 1974 the master airport plan was to configure all of the concourses in a similar fashion. This plan lasted until someone determined that aircraft would not have adequate room to enter and exit gate areas, weaving past various rotundas! Thanks for the update on the terminal.

I recall when that rotunda was the old old international terminal. There's a photo in a book of a British Airways Concorde at a gate there. That's back when PSA was in the "old" version of the central terminal. There were all those chairs looking out of the central terminal onto the Hughes Airwest, PSA, American and United gates, plus great views from the open air observation deck up several floors in that building. You'd walk out on the tarmac to some PSA planes, right underneath an American 747 at a jetway gate. Times change. But it's definitely time for the rotunda to go.
