I've recently started a job as an assistant chief instructor out in Istanbul, Turkey, and our company flies out of the main istanbul airport, with Senecas and 172s....

We use the same runways as the heavies so when we taxi we get some awesome up close action with the A340s, 767s, 747s and the singapore 777-300 everyday! But landing is a stress too, we hold just west of the airport and dive into the runway when the tower tells us to so we dont let the students land or depart from the airport, they train at another field, it's all on the CFI to bring it in and keep the spacing with the heavies.
The tower controllers are scared of us, they told us to our faces when we met them, they told us that they are scared we will mess up an instruction and cause a huge crash etc....so we assured them that we (all 3 CFI's ) were trained in the FAA and have experience with dense air traffic, compared to Turkish operations the FAA is like an ant farm so we can handle the load.

SO with that in mind they recently started letting us have more power so to say in the air, clearing us to land with specific instructions such as touchdown on the last 1/4 of the runway coming in at a 90 degree angle, right after a 757 just vacated, quite stresfull when the runway heading is 353 and you are coming in on 090 at 300 feet to clear the buildings on the side of the airport.... but we've accustomed ourselves...

so ive set the scene, you can imagine the tower controller ready to bark us off the pattern with heavies lined up coming from 18 miles out to 3 miles short final....

well the other day...we were number 2 for takeoff on 18R holding short. Across the street were the folks for 18L. In front of us was a nice Falcon biz jet, and this is the communication that took place

TW: TC-XXX line up and wait 18 Right
FC: Line up and wait runway 18 LEFT

TW: TC-XXX clear for Takeoff runway 18R, contact departure 121.1
FC: Cleared for takeoff runway 18 LEFT, bye bye

in the meanwhile my student and i are amazed to see a boeing 757 Atlasjet, on short final for 18 LEFT in crystal clear weather in broad daylight 2 MILE FINAL. The 757 crew in a worried voice said they were on short final, and the tower said roger cleared to land 18 L winds calm.

Now......it sounds like it isnt a big deal...but if it were IMC....damn...the falcon took off quite fast and the 757 landed, but to me this situation was HIDIOUS....

18R/L is barely visible from the tower, it's down the north end of the airport and hard to differentiate left and right because they are merely 50 meters apart and parallel.

now i ask you this..... had this happened to my flight school in the cheesy 172 RG aircraft we fly....do you think we would have gotten the same treatment...no sir...we would be shut down from operating at that airport forever....

there you have one of the downsides of prejudice in aviation

Which begs the question why are you operating a flightschool at a busy international airport?

the flightschool has been there for 11 years, the airport has only recently started to become busy...

the airfields in turkey are either military run or private, so there isnt much of a choice, only one flight school per private airport, otherwise you pay 5 euros PER tire touchdown...dont think youd like that now would you?
