Continental inaugurated daily non-stop service between Newary and Tokyo's Narita Airport today with their brand new state of the art 777-200s.

American Airlines planed to launch the same root from JFK but backed out because it decided to reitire more planes than expected and because of the Asian crisis, transpacific traffic is weak right now compared to domestic or transatlantic traffic.

Cool. I wonder if they will start CLE-NRT service. Maybe with their new 767-200s or -400s.

I hope that Continental can make a hefty profit with the 777 on a super-long haul route. If it does well, the 777 will be able to give the A340-300 some real competition. Other than a 2000km range advantage for the 777, the specifications for those two planes are closely comparable.

I also hope the Asian airlines replace their 747SR aircraft with a 777SR variant. I think in the future the 777 will be just as versatile as the 747 is today.

BryanG, I think that with only 2 engines, the 777 does not have that much of a future for more variants.

Continental's new 767-200s will be used on the airlines Latin American and European routes. The 777-200 is a great aircraft, but I feel strongly that the 747-400 or future variants of the 747 are better suited for high density long haul routes. The 777-200/300 are great aircraft that should be used to second tier airports like the A330/340. Continental also shoots itself in the foot by flying the 777-200 to Narita due to seat restraints. If anything, they should order 747-400 or the 747-400X or 747-400LRX.

That's right. Continental just inaugurated a new flight from Newark to Tokyo nonstop. That one is on a B777-200IGW which was delivered to Contienental two months ago. They say that they will also start service to Tokyo from Houston as of July 1999, I strongly believe that they will also operate the 777 on that route. You can be sure that their four remaining 747's will leave the fleet very soon, I'm very positive about that.
I really think that the 777 will have a greater future than the 747. It only has 2 engines instead of four, this doesn't mean that it doesn't have a bright future. IT DOES HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE. The 747 is an nice airplane but I like the 777 much better, the only advantage that the 747 has over the 777 is that ETOPS rules do not apply. I don't have the impression that Continental will order 747-400's, neither will Delta.

Ben I think the 777 is a very nice aircraft however, I believe the ETOPS is a HUGE airliner deterant for airlines who would like to fly right through the pacific so dont think that the 747 will soon be gone cause most airlines like that aircraft better. Specially with Airbus getting infront with its A340-500/600 the future for 777 relies more on medium to short rather than long haul I THINK.

I agree with Drew. I am a very very big Boeing fan, but I do not think the 777 is made for trans-pacific routes. The two engines are a draw back no matter what ETOPS rules are implemented. The A340-500/600 has proven that airlines are looking for a four engine aircraft for long haul routes rather than two engines. The 777-200 will be and is a great aircraft for the shorter atlantic ocean flights and longer intercontinental flights.
The 777-200 is a perfect replacement for the DC-10 and 747-200 on long haul continental flights. The long haul flights will be kept to the 747-400 and 747-400X as
it should be. The 777 and 747 compliment on another, with the idea being the 777 compliments the 747. It is like the 747s little brother.

In defense of American..they did not start jfk-nrt and bos-nrt service as planned due to slot availability at NRT not earlier aircraft retirement or availability.As far as using a B-777 on such a long route I feel that the B-747 is much more suited for this as is the A-340.I'm not sure how much of a restriction will be put on passenger and cargo loads to accomodate such a long trip.If this is so the the route will most likely not be profitable for CO.
