I would like to have an ongoing thread about Indian aviation, where news stories, observations, and experiences, which by themselves do not warrant a thread, can be posted. I request all of you to contribute.

Let me start by posting a news article on Spice Jet. Link:
http://www1.economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1319455.cms

Quotes:
The Delhi-based low cost carrier, SpiceJet, on Monday announced that it has raised $80m through an issue of foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) in the international market. The subscribers to the bond issue include Goldman Sachs and Istithmar, the private equity arm of the Government of Dubai.

The company has placed orders for 20 Boeing 737-800 aircraft (10 firm & 10 option). The airline plans to add eight to 10 aircraft in ‘06. It also intends to grow aggressively to induct about 30 aircraft in next three years, according to a company release.

not a bad idea. I've observed that as both of us are in similar time zone, that way I am among the first to respond to your threads. Also we get to read the indian news site before the folks in India and are ideally suited to start the thread.
carrying forward I had created a blog about Indian Aviation news but somehow got lax about it. Let me put some stuff over there and then will post the link.

Thanks-much appreciated. Have you had your first snowfall in Toronto yet?
I lived in Rochester, NY for seven years and endured 100 plus inch of snow every year. Hope you guys have a mild winter this year.

we had our first snowfall on Nov 18th. Have had couple of times since. I spend last winter at YOW and it is worse.
That Bufflo-Niagara region is terrible. I remember 2-3yrs back bufflo had terrible snowfall and snow ploughing vehicles had to be sent from Toronto. I'm sure you must be missing all this in the heat of LAX.

You must be kidding. This time of the year the temperatures are around 67 degrees Fahrenheit high, 46 low-no heat. It does get down to 62 high, and 35-40 low in the middle of winter.

Chicago is definitely colder than Buffalo-Niagara but much less snow. One winter in early nineties, I attended a trade show in Chicago flying in from Madras. I left 80 degrees F and landed on a day when the wind chill factor was about minus 45-the coldest I ever experienced.

Jet Airways to buy a second 737 simulator. Link:
http://dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1000740&CatID=4
Quotes:
This is second full flight B737-800 simulator that the airline is installing for training pilots, after more than a decade. With the airline planning to induct 12 more B737-800 next year, it would require more than 60 pilots to be trained on simulators. The new simulator, the delivery of which is expected some time late next year, would meet not only in-house pilot training, but also the requirement of other airlines.

Currently, the airline offers simulator-training services to Air India on its B737-800 simulator, which was installed in the mid-90s. “We inducted three B737-800 in February this year. Since we do not have the facility to train pilots for 737-800 aircraft, we train them at Jet’s training centre. We have trained around 15-20 Air India Express pilots at their facility,” says Air India spokesperson Jitendra Bargava.

Replying to another question, Patel said Government of Kerala proposes to set up an airline to operate flights to Gulf region.

The Aviation Minister said that Government of Tamil Nadu has a proposal to set up an Aviation University at Madurai to impart training to pilots, engineers, air traffic control personnel, airfield safety operators, communication specialists, aerodrome managers and other allied disciplines.

He informed the Upper House that a few International airlines have decided to fly only in the day time during the ensuing winter season in Delhi.

Is this a serious proposal? Bombay deserves a world class airport and I hope one is built looking forward to 2025. Would they keep the existing airport for domestic flights?

Excellent Idea. If done well, it could attract foreigners for lower cost training and this sector, in about 10 years, could take off like software sector.

A new airport at Navi Mumbai is a Utopian dream unless they build high speed expressways to approach the same from different parts of the city...else it will be a torturous journey....even the much touted Mumbai-Pune expressway starts only at Panvel and to reach the starting point is sheer torture....thereafter, smooth driving....

What the Govt. needs to do is overcome their love for votebanks  frown  and clear all the slums on the airport property.....will provide plenty of space for expanding apron and terminals.....the only challenge is runways....although there are two, they are intersecting....can a single runway at a time handle all the traffic? Or is it feasible to use the intersecting runways simultaneously for T/O's and landings (one on each...)?

What do you all think???

At present, Jet offers cargo carriage facilities by letting out the belly space of its passenger fleet. It also has cargo facilities that are used by several courier companies, besides the postal department and international airlines.

Air Deccan planning a residential flying school near Bangalore Airport. Link:
http://sify.com/finance/fullstory.php?id=14024547

Excerpts:
Low-cost carrier Air Deccan is planning to set up a residential flying school in Bangalore for training pilots, engineers and airhostesses. The proposed facility will be set up in a 15-acre land near Bangalore International Airport. They are in the process of acquiring land for the project.

The airline has tied up with Canadian firm CAE for training modules with two full-motion simulators, flight-training device and simulator maintenance service. For the first three months, CAE would provide training equipment and services for its Airbus A320 and ATR 42/72 fleets. This school will be a one-stop training solutions for Air Deccan as it will provide training for in-flight services, airhostesses, pilots and engineers. Moreover, this facility will enable the airline to save a substantial amount for training.

This flying academy is going to be critical for Air Deccan as it would enable the carrier to cut costs substantially and is all set to acquire 40 Airbus and 38 ATR aircraft in five years and is also innovatively planning to start services for routes such as Nasik-Nagpur, Chandigarh-Jammu, Kolkata-Ranchi, Hyderabad-Rajamundhri, Nagpur-Amritsar, Gwalior-Indore, Bangalore-Bellari, Kolkata-Jamshedpur, Kolkata-Patna and Nagpur-Ahmedabad.
