It's been a while that I haven't seen any posts in the category "Another stupid surprise from BD and its Babies" - does that mean that either a) their "strategy" is making money or that b) they have come up with a real "strategy" now so that people have nothing more to make fun about?

Or is it simply that BD is a hopeless case and people have stopped caring for what they do?

Of course a) would be my preferred option...

IF anything things seem to be getting worse at the moment.

Only this week, four routes were dropped from sale

EMA - CDG
EMA - NCE
LTN - BRU (many of us found this route choice really wierd)
EDI - MUC

We have also learnt that other routes are being hacked back frequency wise this winter

LHR NAP - gone for winter, summer frequencies down to daily
LHR ALC - winter cancellations
JER Widespread winter cancellations
EMA NCE & CDG widespread winter cancellations
ORK LBA - Down to three weekly

we learn that an Embraer will replace an A320 at heathrow for the summer schedule, as BD are finding the charter market more profitable than heathrow ops (which says a lot)

They continue to roll-back on their Heathrow Tiny concept, as frequent fliers have deserted them wholesale. Loads are down, capacity is up, and yields have collapsed. Widespread confusion reigns amongst staff and customers.

From reading flyertalk, many of their *G customers are now openly worried that the carrier doesnt have a future.

Sorry BD, you lost me as a customer, although it's sorry to see you go. The only future I can see for them is if Sir Michael would consider selling up to Sir Richard.

True, but when you have a choice of the following route launches:

LTN - BRU flying a 145 from Luton, with Business class.... and free food in economy
EMA - NCE flying a 145 in competition with EasyJet is a sure way to lose millions
EDI - MUC a twice daily schedule to a major star alliance hub from a BD city where they have a presence

EDI makes sense....

Or more likely C.) Those of us who have been the biggest recent BD critics have all been too busy to comment in detail about whatever are their latest acts of stupidity  Wink

I am not sure about the other routes but the reason the EDI/MUC has been suspended is because slots at MUC are very hard to get and the times offered so far are more than 2 hours later than the times bmi want.
I believe negotiations are still going on and its hoped the route will go ahead as there has been a lot of interest in it, and its not even been advertised yet!
I understand Lufthansa want the route to start as it will feed into the MUC hub.

Thats the reason given. The real reason: Bmi have decided to place an ERJ into Heathrow for the summer season, to free up another A320 for charter operations. The EDI aircraft was due to come from the cancellations of EMA-CDG and EMA - NCE. This aircraft is now scheduled for Heathrow.

Wrong, this is by no means a new concept for BD. I worked for the company in all sorts of capacities from 1994-2002 and I can tell you, every year the schedule was 2nd best to the charter operation.

There are pros and cons to such a move. The pros being obviously the revenue it generates without too much effort from the company. Th down side being that in the past, the compant used to operate a scheduled service off the back of a charter, eg SKG-LHR with a straight turn and onward LHR-AMS.

Now the obvious drawbacks are that the charter service will require extra cleaning on arrival LHR (for obvious reasons), as well as a goood chance of incurring a late arrival due to excessive en route/ground handling/ATC delays due to heavy charter market, and as a result the next sector for the a/c being the schedule LHR-AMS which would ultimately be delayed. A bad business decision at the time to combine the charter and scheduled operation of an aircraft.

However, if the airline can replace an A320 in LHR with an ERJ on LHR-LBA (for example) and can dedicate that A320 to a dedicated charter operation without impacting on the schedule, then why not?
