OK, you are going from NYC to Europe in ECN. Based just on food, who do you want to fly?

I was actually surprised with the quality of United's food... but lets not forget that Virgin is constantly winning the awards for best inflight meals in economy.. and with good reason.

BA had some good lasagna when I was flying ORD - LHR back in May. Other than that, BA has what I'd call mediocre food.

Air India's inflight food is in a totally different league from anyone else, including Virgin and Singapore.

There is always a choice of at least 4 meals (Indian vegetarian, Indian non-vegetarian, Western vegetarian, Western non-vegetarian) and the food is actually tasty. Not only that, but the food is actually a substantial MEAL and not just something that whets your appetite.

The best meals I've had on transatlantic flights were with Air France and British Airways - nice, filling, tasty food and wine, champagne and aperitifs. In my opinion, these are two of the best carriers to fly in terms of service and food quality.

I thought Northwest had pretty decent food when we went from DTW-LGW. We had Medditerrainian Chicken, wiht lovely creamy rice and peas. There was a side of nice salad and a soft warm roll. For dessert it was some really good chocolate moose!

My chioce of great trans atlantic foods are Virgin (constantly winning awards for great economy class food with a great reason), Swissair, KLM, Alitalia (I love Italian food) SAS, Singapore (I love their terriaki Chicken meals) and Air India (Indian food is really great and you get more than you always think you're getting)

While I won't comment on transatlantic food (because I haven't flown transatlantic), one thing I've found quite interesting are the responses about Air India.

I'll admit that Air India isn't the first airline I think of in regards to good catering (not that I thought it was bad - just never heard anything about it, apart from crazy indian domestic stories), but the responses are quite impressive.

Must go and ask some of my friends about AI.

Cheers,

Justin

Air India does not operate domestically within India. They operate a fleet consisting of 15 747s, 3 A300s and 8 A310s on the international longhaul routes.

So the stories you heard could not have been about Air India!

AI wins numerous awards for its inflight catering, especially in premium classes. I have a few trip reports here that go into AI's menu in detail. Email me if you are interested.
