Air Wisconsin Bae-146's After April

After the winter ski season the Air Wisconsin Bae-146's will no longer be flying for United Express, there was talk that United was trying to work somthing out with Air Wisconsin to keep flying them because they are a perfect plane for Aspen and Air Wisconsin has the experience with flying them into Aspen, any news on this have they work it out so they will still fly for United? If not are these planes headed to become beer cans, or will they fly for some other airline? Any thoughts.

I would like to see them fly for someone else. I am sure they will not for united. I have always loved the 146,RJ-85. There is something about the way they look is just cool. I remember flying on one of them on Air Wisconsin. The flight was from HVN to ORD back in 86. I always liked flying on them. Too bad they are a thing of the past in the USA. Or at least soon to be.

I so don't want to see us lose the 146 but there doesn't seem to be any hope in that happening. We keep hearing rumors that we might work out a code share with UA but again, doubtful. Up in ATW right now there are 4 146's just sitting looking sad....it's ashame!

They will undoubtedly be converted to freighters if Wisky doesn't keep them.

Perhaps US will upgrade their PHX flights from DH8s to the 146.

I was wondering what has happened to some of them since the Air Wisc website shows only six in service? Wasnt there like 12 or 13 at one time? To bad the end is near. Maybe Air Cargo Carrier in Milwaukee will pick them up? Their right next door to Air Wisconsin. Hopfully Air Wisc and United can work somthing out before April Sad

I can't tell you who owns them but I can tell you that the Outagamie County Airport in ATW is literally a 146 Graveyard. There are two or three of them parked near the gulfstream hangars which can be seen easily from the road in front of the airport. Another one is parked way over by the Airborne Express hangar on the far side of the airport. And there may be one parked near the ZW hangar as well. They are a mix of 200's and 300's. As of right now N611AW is the only 300 series still in revenue service, and this is spotty at best because this airplane has been used primarily as a spare lately.

As far as the Aspen flying goes, I heard a rumor that the airport was being closed in april for a couple of months to allow for runway construction, possible lengthening of 15-33. The local politicians as well as the people have made it quite clear that they don't want 50 mesa dash 8s replacing the jets. But unless United wants to pick up the avros dirt cheap from NW, I don't see anything else happening here.

In a related story, the airport could lose NW as well, with the Avro's possible being parked. This would leave HP/US in ase with the Dash 8's. Who knows where this is going.

UA would also still serve ASE, just with the Dash 8. Perhaps with a runway lengthening the E170 can safely make it in and out?

I don't think that US can fly them, due to something in the contract. HAs to do with it being a mainline aircraft at one time.

Not a problem...as long as Air Wisconsin allows US Airways mainline pilots to fly them. Otherwise...they will never be in the US system again.

They don't currently own any 146's. Only Dash-8's.

This is no longer the case. This will now begin in 2007, not 2006 as previously planned. It looks like post 3/30/06, ASE will be an all Dash-8 airport, at least in the short-term. Look for an announcement on a new aircraft type under the UA banner being flown into ASE to come sometime later this year, but that is all that I can say right now.

It is my understanding that QX is in a "show & tell" mode to ASE officials right now, showing them the great benefits of the Q400's. 55 ASE officials & business people are set to be hosted in SUN on a special Q400 flight from ASE to SUN sometime in January to show them the attributes & benefits of having the Q400 serve their airport. Look for AS-QX to offer some flights into ASE, but I do not know from which city(s) they plan on operating from. This was recently discussed at the area Chamber of Commerce meeting.

I don't know who would ever want to fly on a Mesa Dash-8 into ASE. Too bumpy. The 146 can be bad enough but the Dash...no thanks.

I think the legal squabble would be costly enough trying to prove the aircraft are different when they are pretty much the same plane. Trying telling a judge they are different. It would almost be arguing the MD-95 vs the 717. Boeing made mods to the 717...but its essentially the same plane.

I remember about 3 years ago, during the peak of the summer, flying the 146 DEN-ASE and return. Just more fun than one should be allowed. At the time, I never realized it was operated by Air Wisconsin...

On the return, the check-in agents handed out little cards explaining the concept of the "Hot and High Takeoff," elaborating as to why some might have to be bumped. Great stuff to see the Aspen-elite mystified with that little yellow piece of paper.

It is more fun in the winter, however.

I will miss the plane; it was a surreal transport to a surreal place.

Give the political climate in ASE, it is unlikely there will be commercial jet service there anytime soon without the 146. The primary concern is and will continue to be noise... Whatever the case, I am in ATL and can get seasonal 757 service to EGE. I think this is what those in power in ASE want; those without their own aircraft can arrive "down valley." A perfect opportunity to accomplish this goal, perhaps?

Anyway, I am glad to have had the privilege to have flown her.

Can't. Scope rules because the 146 was a former mainline bird.

What good does this do? I thought the whole problem were the high mins due to no precision approaches, and the Engine-out procedures for a twin jet because of surrounding terrain, not runway?

I repeat... the issue isn't runway, it's Engine-out procedures to ever make it out of the bowl or do a go around and come back in to land without CFIT.

Seems kind of a strange approach of keeping an old bird in the skies? AWAC could probably dump them to freighters quicker I would think. Or wasn't someone in Europe sucking up those quads to replace ERJ's? Besides... they're old, relatively fuel inefficient, slower than other RJs, and would only serve the ASE niche.
