BA: $1.5B Maintenance Contract W/GE

BA has awarded a $1.5B 10 year maintenance contract for their RB211-524 and CFM56 engines to GE. Contract replaces the current deal due to expire the end of this month. The RR engines power their fleet of 57 744s and 21 767s.

So I guess they'll be keeping their aircraft for a good while longer, huh?

I guess BA and GE have worked through their problems. Or is this due to Mr. Walsh's influence?

On the other hand, maybe there is a 'Gate Gourmet' element to this, this problematic caterer being the only one of the size at LHR (perhaps even the UK) big enough to supply us.

We screwed up big time selling our Engine Overhaul to them, just to get a discount of GE-90's, which took a long time to mature in service.
(We'll never be the, or one of, a launch customer again after that).

Quick story for you.
In the late 1990's, GE had a scheme where personnel who reassembled an Olympus after overhaul quickest, got a prize.
Bully for them, problem is, they were often a bit too quick about it, good job we checked them extensively on return from Wales, before sticking them in an aircraft before running them, but we learned that the hard way.
Fault after fault was all too common.

None of those involved in the GE deal, work at BA now, have not done for years.

Don't forget that oil contamination on RB211's last year, shutting the facility down for a time, a big part of BA's summer 2004 problems.

GDB, for all of your incessant rants against GE and its inability to properly maintain BA's engines, either you are being criminally negligent in not informing management of the danger to your flying passengers or your management is completely daft. Which is it? Seems to me that BA is making a very tidy profit lately and its safety/depatch record is at the top of the heap. Something doesn't add up, please clarify.

It also suggests that the CFM powered 737 classics and early A320s aren't going anywhere either!

Wingman, I know what I saw when I was directly involved, as I alluded to in my previous post, BA learnt to extra double check engines from GE, at least Olympus 593s.

I also saw, at close hand, the effects of the GE facility shut down last year.
(If that does not show up problems there, at least last year, I don't what does).

I am not aware of any direct safety issues, engines from GE, all types, are ground run first, at BA Engineering facilities.

I was very aware of the inconvenience, extra man hour costs, that did not exist, at least to the extent of recent years, when the Wales facility was in BA hands, but the decline in service was not overnight, it happened over years.

Call them 'incessant rants' if you like, they are the truth.

Plenty of people at BA, all much higher up than me, expressed concern at the decline in service from GE, it was well known within BA, steps of course were taken to ensure safety, as stated, with more cost, more work for us, doing what should have been done in Wales.
Glad you think our dispatch reliability is so good, that's not the perception here, inside and outside BA.

As I also alluded to, it could be that like Gate Gourmet, BA might not have too much choice here, unless they want engine overhaul done abroad, likely to be more expensive and more prone to problems like on time delivery etc.

But, I suspect the problems we've had at GE Wales, are probably unique to that particular facility.
(Perhaps newer, maybe poorer, conditions of employment post the GE takeover driving away more experienced people, and/or tempting others into early retirement perhaps, for a start these now ex BA people would lose perks like concessional travel).

I have heard BA managers, in Engineering, state that historically BA has been very poor at dealing with external contractors, allowing deals very negative to BA.
One that comes to mind, another one of direct experience to me, were the new Concorde rudders made by BAe in 1993, (they botched them, we had accepted a free extra 9th rudder set, in exchange for no warrentry, we soon regretted that), it's not just GE by any means.

I sincerely hope GE have resolved the problems at Wales, I also hope BA drove a hard bargain, for a change.
