Did anyone else think back to in "Waterboy" when the Waterboy isn't playing in the bowl game and the two hickish fans go "Oh no, we suck again!" while reading this? Tough break for RFD... but when you start paying everyone in the world to serve you on a temporary basis, you have to expect that as the grants run out they're going to leave again.

I was just wondering if anybody in here has any advice on how to attract air service to an airport when the Board of Commissioners of that airport tells you that it is your primary objective to do so. I am a student, so I am eager to hear any and all input.

What would you do?

RFD is definitely attracting the service by throwing money at it. It seems as if their problem is retaining service. The only way to do that is to get pax on the planes... or throw more money at it. Until it becomes worthwhile for pax to pay whatever the fare premiums are at RFD (assuming it's more expensive from RFD than ORD/MKE still) they're not going to come. Although NW's black eye with the mech. strike and everything may have not helped in the general public's point of view. Hooters supposedly did well there, you'll have to wait and see about UAX.

So you would do exactly as what is currently being done.

Thanks for the input.

Looking for input from others as well.

With one exception. I wouldn't have thrown money to UAX for DEN... I would have thrown it for IAD. In their specific case, throwing money for DEN pissed off Hooters, and when you're trying to get any service you can, you don't want to start pissing off carriers.

That's a good point. Their was a Hooters flight to BWI for a meeting with Norman Mineta that earned Rockford a cool million:

I don't know if they attempted to get IAD service or not from United, but it seems like it would have made sense.

Umm...what is the point of non-stop RFD-DEN on UA, which the website states as offering an opportunity to "connect to over 100 destinations worldwide" when you can drive an hour and get TRIPLE that on the same airline? I don't get it. Also Rockford is not "Northwest Chicago". The only way Rockford is "Northwest Chicago" is if Bakersfield is "Northeast LA" or San Diego is "Southeast LA" (not just referring to distance but "seperateness" considering how SoCal is a lot more spread out than Chicagoland). When I lived in Chicago I lived in the Western suburbs (Oak Brook) and Rockford is not somewhere I would drive to catch a flight. Maybe if I lived in the Elgin or some such it would be a viable alternative to ORD but still...??

You can drive an hour to get to the middle of the interstate maybe, but not to ORD.  Wink

Dude! I live in Burr Ridge. I totally agree with you on this comment. Rockford is not really in the immediate Chicago area.

I totally agree with you on this comment.

Even if one lived in Southern Wisconsin it might be worth it but then you can choose from Madison, MKE or ORD. But even then there are shuttle buses that connect these cities to each other's airports.

I personally feel that Metra should just make a line from Chicago to Madison via Rockford and connect it to ORD.

The tracks aren't rated for Metra speeds at the present time, according to the Rockford Transportation Coalition.

Actually not that inconceivable anymore.

With Los Angeles sprawl now moving through the Grapevine on I-5 and people commuting from housing in Bakersfield to jobs in Los Angeles, BFL has already considered in its planning that it may end up as a "Los Angeles" serving airport.

Public forest land blocks growth directly north of the Los Angeles suburbs, so development is making a huge jump to Tejon Ranch for housing and industrial development. There is no city adjacent to support this growth, rather it is just some of the closest available land to Los Angeles.

That 75 mile gap between Bakersfield and the northern suburbs at Santa Clarita is disappearing rapidly.
