Hi,
In a couple of weeks I'm going on a trip to Portland from SLC on American Airlines, what's your opinion on American? Do they have good service? This would be my first time on American.

In my opinion AA are the best of the big US domestic airlines. Maybe Continental are as good. I'm not a fan of Delta or Northwest. I know DL have a good reputation but a few years ago on an American tour I flew 16 flights with DL over a fortnight or so and only about 2 of them were on time, we had to stay overnight en-route twice (Atlanta both times, inevitably), and the whole operation seemed to be a complete mess. Yet another delay at ATL was cos the flight crew were in New Hampshire! It was quite surreal at times. I was very disappointed and have always avoided them since. I think their corporate decision making is very conservative (who needs 767-400s? Zzz! Talk about conservative! Roll the dice! Buy 777s!) and the fleet is very old as a result (all those TriStars!).

Hi :

American Airlines is ok ... I think you'll be flying on its MD-80. Select your seat on a 2 row ailes (row A & B) for those are the most comfortable seats ...

Enjoy your flight ... (I'll be flying shortly too)

I flew on AA from MIA to Ronald Reagan in DC. I flew First Class both ways on a 727-200. It was nice but not exceptional. I recently flew MIA to PHX on First Class on a 727-200 and the serive as well as the seats were exceptional. If I were you I would go with CO as long as the ticket price is the same.

Cedarjet:

The 767-400s that Delta ordered were originally supposed to be 777-223IGWs. I'm sure that Delta's corporate management would love to jump on the 777 bandwagon with United, Continental, and American. But, since the ALPA and Delta still can't agree on 777 pilot pay and working conditions, the 4 777s that were on order have been deferred and replaced with the 767-400s. The dispute is also why, to the best of my knowledge, Delta hasn't started operating the 777s it already has in its possesion.

Hi I'm Ben,
American is a very good airline, that's what I always fly. They have always treated me well, I have always had very good service on board, the food is delicious and the crews are friendly. NOTHING TO COMPLAIN. They are putting new seats now on their planes.
But remember this: you can't fly American direct from Salt Lake City to Portland, you will have to go through either Dallas or Chicago (chances are you will be on MD-80's). Delta must have a direct flight because SLC is a hub for them.
Have a nice trip.

Fair enough. I'm just a little disappointed in Boeing for building the 767-400 and 757-300 in the first place, it's the kind of thing McDD would have done in their last days (MD90, MD11). I think it's also known as flogging a dead horse. Sales for these new stretches are kind of bearing this out, esp the 757-300 (thank god for Arkia and Condor, eh?).

If Delta are having industrial relations problems with the introduction of the 777, they should probably sit on their hands and wait it out (or solve the dispute) rather than commit to old but expensive technology to solve short term capacity problems. Surely they could find a few more TriStars on short-term leases then buy 777s?

Do you have any idea how far away Dallas and Chicago are from SLC/Portland? My ticket says American Airlines SLC-PDX nonstop. Maybe they picked up a new route? I'm just a guest on this trip, (family reunion), I'd hate to fly east to get west! Are you sure they don't go nonstop, because if not then we got a big problem here.

I agree. Delta should just park the 777s in Atlanta and wait for DALPA to come up with a better offer. They're now considering dumping the two 777s they have.

They'll pay in the long run.

I'm sure it's a fabulously well-engineered aircraft that will make lots of money for anyone who owns it, and will be a delight for passengers and crew alike (it is a Boeing after all), but it seems unnecessary when other Boeings (namely the 767-200) already do the job. Sorry, please don't take it personally cos it's your nickname.

I would like to see AA buy more 767s and put them into service between hubs like Delta does alot.
