Hi!!
I'm taking a trip to Hawaii before long, and I would like to know what the BEST Hawaiian airline and Airport is. Many might say HNL, but have any of you been to the other Hawaiian airports? Not just the majors, but how about the smaller ones, like Hana, for instance? I'd love to know so I can help plan my trip. Also, which airline? It could be an airline based elsewhere, but which offeres the best flight experience in coach to Hawaii? Hawaiian? Delta? AA? UA? CX? etc.
Thank you all for your info, and how about some great things you've done before in Hawaii? It's my first trip there! I'd love to hear!!!
Thank you!!!!

I went to Hawaii in 1997. its awesome!!!!! I think you should fly Delta, Since they are retiring the L-1011 Tristar soon. Also Delta gives you mroe room in coach than the others that fly into Hawaii. If you are flying Inter-Island, Fly Aloha Airlines. Their Boeing 737-200's look brand new!!!!! Finally, The best airport is Kahului Airport in Maui. Its kinda small, But very clean, and the baggage claim is open-air. You would like it

Kona on the west end of the Big Island is also nice. It is served by Aloha, United (with a 744 now I think!), JAL and maybe Korean. I went there in 1997 and much of it is open air and the runway is right on the ocean. I flew a United DC10 and although it was a little cramped, the flight was not all that unenjoyable. And when in Hawaii, go snorkeling. The fish there are amazing.

HNL is great, you have to visit the aviation muesum there (I forgot about it, and didn't get to ). Lot's of DC-10's, and 747's at HNL also. OGG (Maui) is a nice airport to visit also. I flew on Aloha, and I have to say they we're dirty inside. Every window was dirty (couldn't get good pics) there was like a slimy film on the windows. The second aircraft was a little cleaner. Go snorkeling, para-sailing, helicopter tours (awsome), anything while you can while your there. It was great!

I have been at HNL, Kona and Kahului, which were mentioned already. Out of them, Kona is my favourite bcause all is open air. For spotting, HNL is great, as you have good visibility and photo positions.
Ihave flown B757 on UAL and L1011 on DL. I'd suggest to take DL, as the L1011 are more spacious.

I love OGG. I manage to get that way every spring since I was 8 and its a new adventure every year. Especially since the renovation, it's such a modern, clean, friendly environment. I just wish the Kahului board would approve runway expansion.
I've flown there from
UA
SFO-DC10, 767, 757
LAX-DC10, 757
DL
SLC-L1011
LAX-L1011
TW
STL-763
TZ
PHX-757
SN
SFO-DC10-15

I prefer Hawaiian over Aloha. The planes are cleaner and they seem to have their act together.
As for the islands. I have been to Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island (Hawaii). my fav place is Kauai but Maui and Hawaii are great too.
I prefer TWA to the islands they fly 767-300's to OGG and HNL and 757-200's to KOA. The seating is much better then that on the special Hawaii configurations of AA and UA which squeeze more seats onto Hawaii flights then normal confirgurations.

i really appreciate it, guys. Thanks alot. I think I'll be flying Delta. Based on both routes I want to fly for evaluation purposes (PWA future routes), and which airline is best, I'll probably fly DL from SLC-SFO, then from SFO-HNL. Once my stay there is completed, I'll fly to OGG, then LIH (Lihue), and then KOA. A short hop to Hilo, and a trip to Volcanoes Nat'l park. From there, back to HNL for a flight home. Or maybe return from OGG? Possibly!! LOL
Kauai has always been my favorite, based one the pictures. It has the lush vegetation, which I LOVE, LOVE!!! And it reminds me of my hometown Pocatello, with all the rugged scenery and forests. I think I'll live there someday, it's one of my dreams!
Anyhow, thank for the info, guys, appreciated greatly!

I'm flying to Hawaii in December. From RIC, it is cheapest to fly American to LAX, then connect to a Hawaiian DC-10 to HNL. I searched for all the possible flight combinations, and that is the cheapest. I am using AAdvantage miles to upgrade to first class, and the upgrade includes the Hawaiian segment as well.
As far as inter-island flights go, I think Hawaiian is best. Their DC-9 interiors are very nice and there is more legroom than Aloha. However, like Dazed 767 said about Aloha, Hawaiian also has dirty windows. I try to be one of the first ones on so I'll have time to look around for a seat with a fairly clean window, but sometimes a clean window is impossible to find.
