Looks very smart on the 757! This new scheme is very much like 'Presidential' and 'Leisure Air.'

On Monday, I checked in for my weekly flight CMH-ATL on Continental. I noticed that the US check in area had been completely stripped of logos, titles, etc. So had the America West check in area. The Huntleigh scaliwags who uselessly check your ID and pass before the TSA checks your ID and pass said that they were moving on Tuesday.

this is one of the best B757 C/S.... it makes a good sample! The New US C/S is actually better than I first expected.... is not the most amazing one, but it sure is the best out of all the US airlines.... congrats to a great taste!

Not until it completely replaces the old colors. THOSE were the best in the US.

At CMH, HP has a bunch of empty gates available where they used to have the focus city operations, so it makes sense for US to move over there.

There's also a closed-up club, used to be the TWA Ambassadors Club, then was an America West Club while the hub was operational...

The same can be said of US, you know.  Silly

I'm not slamming this C/S, just personal opinion.

I am not creative at all, I have problems drawing stick figures. This paint scheme looks like something I would have come up with, it's just TOO simple.

Oh well, at least it's hard to make a 757 look bad!

My compliments to the photographer!

I didn't think there were that many open gates in the A concourse... it's pretty small. Or were the US gates underused?

Didn't know US had a club in CMH, either... or that they had a focus city op there! When was it operational?

I agree IMO its hard for a livery to look ugly on a 757  wink

You know what, I apologize, I could've swore that US had a club at CMH once, but now that I look, I seem to have been mistaken. They had one damn near everywhere else though.  Smile

As for the focus city, it was strongest in the early 90's, probably the 1992-1995 period or so. It slowly built up, and it replaced a lot of the focus city operation US had at CLE. It then slowly trickled down over a number of years, with only a few prop routes left by 1999. During the peak years, they had 35-40 daily departures.

Mainline cities at various points were BOS, BWI, CLT, DAY, DCA, EWR, IAD, IND, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCO, PHL, PIT, TPA.

Express cities at various points were CAK, CLE, DAY, DTW, GRR, IND, ROA, YYZ.

Some of the mainline cities obviously received Express frequencies as well. might've missed a city or two, since things did change pretty often; I'm also sure that US served a variety of other cities if you go back in the early 80's and earlier, but that was a different time, clearly. And I want to stress that not all of those cities were served simultaneously; I'd say about 12-14 cities were usually served at any one time.

The move was completed tonight. I met my plane this evening standing next to the wing of a USAirways 737-300. The combined operation will use gates B21-B25, all of which were former America West gates. It was definitely neat seeing them in use again, especially with mainline aircraft on the RJ-side. For those that don't know, the north side of the B Concourse (gates B16, B18, B20, B22, B24, B26) were all used for America West Express operations during the hub days. However, HP purposely had the setup designed so a mainline aircraft could fit at gate B22. It saw its first mainline jet tonight. Supposedly, Southwest will be packing up and moving to the A Concourse, but the deal is still being worked out by the CRAA and WN.

There was a short-lived USAir Club in the A Concourse at CMH at one time. It was located in between what is now gates A4 and A5, by the former USAir customer service center. If/When Southwest moves into A, that area is supposed to be renovated into new restaurants and shops, which are severly lacking in the A Concourse.

Man, US had a focus city at CLE too?? I knew they had the old DAY hub left over from Piedmont... what a weird place!

I think US just had a mission in the 80s and 90s of having hubs and focus cities in as many oddball Midwest locations as possible... MCI, DAY, CLE, CMH...  Smile

Yeah, a big one, they called it a hub, 80-90 flights a day, before CO really made their push at CLE, back when UA was big there. Mainline to ALB, BDL, BOS, BUF, BWI, CLT, DCA, EWR, FLL, IND, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCO, MIA, MKE, PBI, PHL, PHX, PIT, ROC, RSW, SFO, SYR, TPA, YUL, YYZ. Practically no Express at all, just to CMH, DAY, DTW, ERI.

Yes, US did have focus cities and/or small hubs all over the place, it's true.

Cities where US has operated at various points what could be called a focus city or hub, just since ~1990 I'd say are BOS, BWI, CLE, CLT, CMH, DAY, DCA, EWR, FLL, IAD, IND, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCI, MCO, PHL, PHX, PIT, SFO, SYR, TPA. And they ran point-to-point routes at dozens of other airports. US just had a killer East Coast franchise. Coverage East of the Mississippi like nothing any other airline has ever had or ever will, including US, ever again. They were a very strong #2 in the country in total domestic pax carried in 1990 or so, right after the mergers, and that was with next to nothing in the middle of the country.

But you must remember, what was called a hub back then is not what we call a hub today. Even the larger of the "hubs", aside from the mega-hubs at PIT and CLT and to a lesser extent PHL, were small by today's standards. The biggest of the smaller hubs, BWI, had only 250 flights. DAY/LAX/TPA had about 120 each. SFO/MCI each peaked at 100. EWR/CLE had 80-90. IAD peaked at about 120 in 2000, a latecomer to the US focus cities. But it wasn't just US who had a smaller definition of a hub--the same can be said of UA at CLE, or AA at RDU, or so on.
