LH Big At DFW In 80's And Early 90's?

i remember being at DFW a lot in the early 90's and I remember seeing lufthansa A310's DC-10's and 747's i remember seeing bunches of them at the same time, does anyone know anything about it?

The Dallas route was operated mainly by 747s and was a continuation of LH's daily Frankfurt - Charlotte service. DC10s were substituted in winter.

You wouldn't have thought Charlotte would warrant a 747 from Germany every day but there are big business links between Charlotte and Germany. Everything in the area including the name of the city and Mecklenberg County is named after German queens / dynasties etc.

Thank god Blink! my buddy thought i was crazy, i told him i swore seeing a 747-200 of LH FRA-DFW-MEX-DFW-FRA and i remember seeing the A310 as well. I cant really remember the DC-10 though, i would not doubt it though.

I lived in Dallas/worked at DFW from 90-96, and LH was in daily, though never more than one jet at a time. I don't ever remember it being a continuation from CLT, but at various times it was a simple turn from FRA and an en-route stop to/from IAH and to MEX. I think its a stand alone turn now. They started with 10's, flew both 747-200 and -400 and are flying 340s now. They used to come into AA 2E, but switched to 1W sometime around 92 or 93.

I think DFW has always been an important market for Lufthansa. They opened the route on 1st May 1980.
It must partly due to the historical links between Germany and Texas.
However it's interesting to note that Houston isn't a very strong LH market, despite it's in Texas either.

What about the MEX and IAH routes? When were the continuation discontinued in favor of non-stop flights?

I knew about the IAH continuation, but are you sure about the MEX?

BTW, as information (openning of the route):
IAH - 2nd June 1985
MEX - 5 May 1966

When did the 747-400 operate the route?

Maybe I'm wrong about CLT being an en route stop on the flight to DFW. CLT was definitely an en route stop on the way to SOMEWHERE, maybe Houston or Atlanta? I still think it was DFW but you guys would probably know better, if you lived in Texas.

As far as i can remember LH never flew the 747-430s on a scheduled basis, only once in a while on a substitution. they used the 747-230 and 747-230/combi during most of the late 80s and early 90s. Then switched to the A340 in 94-95, and is the current plane used now. LH also has multi cargo flights into DFW with the MD11F, which some also continue on to MEX. The 707s and DC-10s were used in the begining, early 80s.

I'm not sure where you got your info, but Houston is indeed a very strong market for Lufthansa. Passenger loads were enough to warrant making IAH a non-stop market as opposed to a continuation of the DFW run, and they are still increasing. According to my sources IAH may even see 747 service to FRA for the winter schedule.

Do you sources say the opposite? That could be interesting to learn more about that.

But anyways, no, Houston is doing very well indeed. I'll dig up some info on passenger loads given to me by LH reps here at IAH, so I can give you exact number to back me up.
