US Airways 757's To Europe?

US Airways has a limited Transatlantic fleet and with US Carriers seem keen to maximise there fleets on profit making routes like Delta have done with their 767-400 aircraft.

I appreciate the old US Airways' 757's are early versions and are not capable range wise to make it to Europe from their PHL hub. But now US Airways and America West are merging I was thinking of the possibility of America West switching some of their 757's to the PHL hub and flying to Europe.

They could potentally use the 757's on niche routes like Continental have done with the 757's to EWR.

As far as I am aware America West's 757's are ETOPS enabled as they will be operating these from their PHX hub to Hawaii next summer. I am not all that clued up on ETOPS and the operational differences between a flight to Hawaii and Europe, so please don't shoot me down!

I honestly don't see it happening.

Their 762's cover the seasonal markets, and from travelling on one myself, they manage to pack them up pretty tightly. The A333's cover the large markets, and more importantly the Star Alliance connection hubs (FRA, MAN, etc.). From what I can gather, the loads are consistently good, and thus there is really no need to introduce a smaller aircraft to Europe.

HP just started it's Hawaii service this week. While the certificates and union contracts are still separate, and will be until 07 I believe, there is an agreement whereby US can operate on daily service to Hawaii for HP, and HP can operate 2 dailies to Europe/Caribbean for US.

US 757 are not ETOPS, but I've never heard they don't have the range for Europe, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I've mentioned several times that US should take advantage of their 757s and start some European service as CO and AA are doing - long and thin is perfect for the 757.

Once US gets the 332s on order (Gilesdavies, see your other US thread concerning 332 order) it would make sense to use the 762s on domestic/Hawaiian/Caribbean service, hopefully with an interior update based on several comments made here! The oldest frame is still not quite 20 years old, still some life there.

USAirways 757's are newer than America West's.

USAirways original 757's are former Eastern Air Lines. Then they got some factory fresh ones.

America West 757's are former Republic Airlines as well as Eastern Air Lines 757's if I am not mistaken. So the USAirways 757's would have the capability to fly those routes if they had the on board equipment to be ETOPS.

AFAIK, that would be correct. I know that the majority of our 757 fleet came from these two sources, but I don't want to guarantee that all of them did. However, you are correct, most of our 757s are older than US's.

Currently, only three of our 757s are ETOPS certified. This gives us an aircraft to operate the PHXHNL route, one to do the PHXOGG route, and an extra aircraft that operates segments on the west coast and is a backup. The aircraft that are currently ETOPs certified are: 908 (AZ Cardinals Scheme), 909, and 910. The latter two are both regular scheme a/c. Today, we will be operating our fifth day of flights to HNL and OGG. At present, the aircraft utilization on the routes have been:

908: Has only done one Hawaii flight to HNL on 12/18
909: Has done PHX-OGG each day and is scheduled for today
910: Has done all PHX-HNL flights except 12/18, and is scheduled for today

By March 1, we will need to have at least four more of our 757s ETOPS certified because that is when we expand our services to Hawaii with three more daily flights. I have not heard anything about which birds will be certified though.

If US used a 757 in to MAN it would be a second daily PHL, as the current daily service on a 330 is choca everyday.

As I understand 901AW,902AW and 903AW are to be the next a/c to get HmG's and necessary components to certify ETOPS. Ships 904AW,905AW and 906AW to follow w/i latter '06. 907AW will not be done and 913AW,914AW and 915AW are not even considered as worthy candidates for ETOPS.

BAA GLA are very keen to get US on a year round basis. I would imagine the 767 would stay during the Summer and a 757 used during the Winter.

The HP 757's do not have the range to do transatlantic flights. They are taking weight restrictions flying to Hawaii from PHX currently. Someone asked about this very question in our newsletter and corporate said it will not happen anytime soon.

Don't argue geography with KAHALA001. IF he says there is an ocean there so be it.

Just a note. 910 and 908 got switched today so the Cardinal plane should be on its way out to HNL....albeit a little late.

Gotcha, the utilization that HP does with there 757's is not great and it would be nice to see them do smarter routes such as the ones you previously mentioned.

908 was the one that did the turn back a few days ago because of the HF radio not working and I believe this is the plane that has been in Honolulu for a day or so with the same issue and got back into PHX about 1045 this morning
