Train At ATL

The existing train at ATL will probably be extended to the new international terminal and concourse. However, there are other proposals, including the South Passenger Complex and CONRAC. Connecting the existing train to these places would make the waits much longer. How should the people at ATL handle this? Note that I do NOT mean to create this as a poll, but to simply discuss solutions.

I personally think that there should be two new trains, the Blue Line and the Green Line. The current train should be named the Red Line.

The Blue Line should be an underground shuttle from the main terminal to the South Passenger Complex.

The Green Line should be an above-ground monorail from the main terminal to CONRAC.

Any ideas?

The CONRAC has been awarded. It will be the same system as the new DFW.

Automated People Mover (APM) System: To accommodate passengers to and from the Central Passenger Terminal Complex (CPTC) and the new CONRAC Facility, a new Automated People Mover System (APM) will be built. This APM will be similar to the one already in operation at the Airport, which takes you from concourse to concourse. The APM track will be elevated over I-85 and U.S. Hwy 29 and will have three stops including one near the Georgia International Convention Center.

The International Terminal will be connecter by the existing Secure train (how someone with bags and no board pass gets back to the main terminal is a good question) I would guess a bus.

The train to the South terminal will be at least a secure train for anyone that needs to connect to the main terminal gates. The was a Article in the ABJ taking about that they could expand the current terminal to handle the new south gates. Then everyone would go to the same terminal. It is about as far from them to Concourse E and would less the confusion.

Someone explain this to me:

1. Where is it going to be built?

2. Is this new terminal going to be connected with the current concourses?

3. If not, is the new APM going to be an express train to the N/S terminals from the new terminal? If it is an express, where is the station going to be?

4. Is the security check-point going to be at the new terminal, or back at the Main terminal?

The International Concourse is already connected to the terminal by the existing secure train. If you are ending your trip in Atlanta, you submit your bags to be transported to the main terminal before re-clearing security. You then claim the bags at the main terminal. It's not exactly the best solution for ATL-bound passengers, given the need to re-clear security, but that's how it works today.

If they can simply expand the north and south terminals to provide sufficient check-in & baggage claim capacity and then just connect the new gates via train, that would seem to be the best (and probably least expensive) solution. I think you'd have less passenger confusion and it would probably be easier to get AirTran or the carriers in the D Concourse to move into that facility.

1. The new South Passenger Complex will be built to the south of the main terminals, north of the new runway but south of the current runways. On the map on this page: http://www.atlanta-airport.com/Defau...=sublevels/airport_info/gmpage.htm , it is the structure highligted in dark purple. It is expected to include about 31 gates. IMO it should be named the "Z" terminal, with gates Z1-Z31.

3. The station IMO should be at the Central Passenger Terminal Complex, in between the current N/S terminals.

4. Probably at both. There will also likely be one at the new Jackson terminal (the area in green) being built east of the main terminals.
