Hey,

No more info, at the moment.

BBC News just flashed it in the News Alerts. More than 18 on board.

From BBC:

Quote:
An Azerbaijan passenger jet has gone missing after taking off from the country's capital, Baku, reports say.

There was no immediate confirmation of casualties, but the plane was thought to be carrying at least 18 people.

So sad, so close to Xmas

Thanks
Mike

When will we hear about survivors, airline, destination, or aircraft type?

German radio just reported it as:
"An-142 down with 23 pax, wreckage has been found.
Aparently no survivors."
Is there an An-142 ? I´m only aware of a An-140 ...

More info from Reuters.com:
MOSCOW (Reuters) - An Azeri passenger plane with 23 people on board crashed on Friday soon after take off from the Caucasus state's capital Baku, Russia's RIA news agency reported.

RIA quoted the Azeri transport authority as saying that An-142 aircraft bound for the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan with 18 passengers and five crew disappeared from radar screens 20 minutes after take-off. It was not clear if there had been any survivors.

Itar-Tass news agency said the plane was An-140.

"As became known later the plane crashed near the village of Kyurdakhany some 15 km (10 miles) from Baku," RIA said. It said the plane belonged to Azerbaijan's flag carrier AZAL.

Azerbaijan Airlines only started taking delivery of its An-140s a year ago. I think it had four on order.

Irrespective of the cause, it's a bitter blow for such a young programme, following on from the Aeromost An-140 accident.

I know this is early, but does anyone have an idea what aircraft it was? I don't see any reports on ASN yet.

Thanks

BBC says according to AP it was An-140. Must have been (nearly) brand new, then.

RIP to all those aboard.

If this turns out not to be pilot error, i assume the whole fleet will be grounded and Antonov will get a pretty bad name?

Thanks

Can anyone describe the history of the An-140 a bit?

This is sad news, indeed.

What can be said, except that my deepest condolences are offered to the afflicted. Life can be very cruel, and it certainly was in this case.

God be with them.

This is indeed already the second crash of an AN-140, exactely three years ago after the first one :

On Dec.23rd 2002, an "Aeromist" An-140 crashed while attempting to land at IFN (Isfahan / Iran), after a flight from Kharkov with an intermediate stop in Turkey.
The crash was attributed to a poor weather, consisting in heavy fog.
The a/c ((UR-14003), had carried only 27 landing and 71 hours flying time since it was delivered on Nov.30 2002.

Seeing as Azerbaijan is an Islamic country, I don't expect any of the grieving relatives give a monkeys that it's nearly Christmas. The last of their worries.

That's really low for an a/c of three years. Was on a 4U Airbus last week which had 30 flying hours since delivery four days ago.

My thoughts and condolences go out to everyone affected directly or indirectly by this sad crash too.

Georg.
