Hi folks.

Just to give you an update about major routes within Mexico. Data includes commercial operations from Jan to Sept 2005.

To my surprise, MEX-GDL is no longer the 2nd route with more traffic. Instead, MEX-CUN (up until Wilma hit CUN) had grown to become nr 2.

PAX flown in thousands (Jan-Sept '05)

1. MEX-MTY 731
2. MEX-CUN 638
3. MEX-GDL 548
4. MEX-TIJ 422
5. GDL-TIJ 295
6. MEX-HMO 256
7. MEX-MID 249
8. MEX-VSA 200
9. MEX-ACA 171
10.MEX-PVR 154

Another amazing (but very logical) fact is that routes departing TIJ are considerably lower in pax that those routes arriving to TIJ.

For instance, MEX-MTY carries 0.5% more pax than MTY-MEX. Same figures appear for most routes. However, if you take TIJ's five top routes you see that incoming pax are, in some cases, more than 60% of those outgoing:

MEX-TIJ 422,829 pax
TIJ-MEX 337,627 pax
Difference 25%

GDL-TIJ 295,602 pax
TIJ-GDL 231,329 pax
Difference 28%

MLM-TIJ 99,073 pax
TIJ-MLM 61,693 pax
Difference 61%!!!!!!

BJX-TIJ 93,320 pax
TIJ-BJX 64,760 pax
Difference 44%

CUL-TIJ 75,798 pax
TIJ-CUL 65,798 pax
Difference 14%

MTY-TIJ 50,960 pax
TIJ-MTY 46,469 pax
Difference 9%

Really interesting!!! But for instance, if you totalize in and out all the pax of top 5 TIJ routes makes 1.037,582 as for the outgoing it makes 807,676, that is a big difference of 229,906... where are they? Would be very interesting to see how other TIJ routes perform.... IIRC, Avolar started in October... we should also wait to see their numbers!!! Can't wait to see DGAC's report!!!

Good information, Pzurita1. Amazing that only one route did not involved MEX. I hope to see more non-MEX routes make the top 10 next year, for instance TLC-GDL, TLC-MTY, and TLC-CUN.

Feliz navidad a todos

People crossing the border and never coming back?

I expect TLC-MTY to grow a lot in 2006. Interjet and AM have given TLC a push. Especially AM here in MTY, all of the bus stops seem to have an AM ad regarding their MTY-TLC flights.

In a way yes.
They cross the border, continue on for the final destination, by bus or car, spend a few months working and saving money.
When they are ready to return, they usually can afford a nonstop ticket back...plus, it is easier so they can carry all their stuff back that they acquired while they were here.

Juventus and Alitalia,

SJD is trully geard towards US as a touristic place. Only 2 out of its 10 routes with more traffic are domestic:

DESTINATION PAX ('000)
LAX 162
PHX 100
DFW 80
MEX 80
IAH 71
SAN 65
SFO 64
DEN 30
GDL 27
ORD 24
LAS 22
SLC 18
SEA 15
ATL 11
NYC 10
ONT 9
MZT 8
MTY 5

etc...

ZIH is still fairly dominated by MEX:

DESTINATION PAX ('000)
MEX 103
LAX 26
IAH 19
DEN 7
MTY 5.7
DFW 5.6
MSP 5.2
SFO 5.0
YUL 4.4
PHX 4.0

etc...

Just analyzing what Cintra was trying to do with MX and AM and knowing the most flown routes I find the following:

1. MEX-MTY 731
Cintra tried to leave AM alone on the route and left MX at the end with few flights on this route
2. MEX-CUN 638
Big rumors we heard that this was for AM, but MX never left (for good)
3. MEX-GDL 548
With the AM "air bridge" MX reduced flights to GDL
4. MEX-TIJ 422
Taken away from MX some years ago
5. GDL-TIJ 295
Cintra reduced MX's 4 dailys to 1
6. MEX-HMO 256
MX pulled out in favor to AM although MX was dominant there years ago
7. MEX-MID 249
50%-50% aprox
8. MEX-VSA 200
One of MX, still dominant carrier over AM
9. MEX-ACA 171
50%-50%
10.MEX-PVR 154
50%-50%

We'll see what Posadas and MX do in the TIJ market as well as MTY & HMO.

Come fly Mexicana, to Mexico!

Jopavon!

Good to see you posting! Just to begin with, MX will bring back several destinies in Mexico and other more in the US for 2006 and they will add more frequencies to TIJ, GDL, CUN and MTY.

Lets talk in a year and compare the numbers!

What about the SAN-Mexico and LAX-Mexico routes... how does that routes perform in terms of incoming and outgoing passengers?

Several people buy a o/w ticket to TIJ, cross the border then go to Cali by land, work for some months and then back to Mexico with a one way ticket....

I just have a quick question with all the maquiladoras in Ciudad Juarez and a population of over 2 million people, why is this not a focus city like TIJ?

You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.

I guess it has to do with what is on the other side of the border.

TIJ is the entrance point to California (where more Mexicans live). LA has over 5 million people of Mexican origin.

On the contrary, CJS despite its size, shares border with ELP, a medium city and few other cities of any size in the surroundings.

PAX flown in thousands (Jan-Sept '05)

1. MEX-MTY 731

Really a big cake. No wonder all airlines but Click now fly the route, even Magnicharters who will be re-starting again w/4X from Jan 13th w/ regular 737 200/300, not The VIP Aircraft. I wonder if they still have it?

And TLC- MTY is Growing. Amazing LF for 5D and IJ

Hello all:

Just writing and not to change the subject, but is there any chance in the future that the one Mexican airlines or two may start service from a California city to TIJ. I know that LA is still close enough to fly into, but maybe FAT, SMF, OAK, SFO, SJC. I've been to Tijuana 4x this year and mostly fly into SAN and cross the border, a hassle. It would be easier to fly into TIJ and back home here to OAK. Allegro airlines had a flight from OAK to GDL through TIJ. Any hopes of that coming back. A while back ago MX also used to fly a one stop service from GLD-MXL-OAK. I think that since Baja California N/S is growing rapidly that air demand will increase in the future. Also anyone have any information regarding TIJ as a future gateway to Asia ? TIJ has a small Chinese community, have you seen all the Chinese Buffets in TIJ. I had once read on a thread that MX might fly their future A330's from TIJ probably from connecting service from GDL or MEX, anyone know anything about this ?

MX is seriously interested in flying to Asia soon. As a matter of fact, they have mentioned that they want to start operations for the Olympics. However, in order to be able to reach China, MX will need the A340, as the range of the A330 would be insufficient, and so far there have been no news of an A340 order. The proposed routing would be MEX-TIJ-Asia or MEX-SJD-Asia because MEX' altitude complicates things. TIJ could be a good choice because of the maquiladoras.

Not a California city, but AM just received US authority to start flights between TIJ and Las Vegas. At least that will allow using other airlines to connect in LAS.
