I know a couple of years ago American offered my dad to pay to retain his elite status on American since he did not re-qualify with miles. So my question is does such a program exist where you can pay and retain your status with American?

Thanks for your help!

It does, but only if you were an elite and your status was about to expire. It is also a targeted iffer, so if you have not received an email detailing that promotion than unfortunately you can not pay to retain your elite status. You could try the gold or platinum challenge (for more info go to flyertalk.com).
