Etickets-Cost Effective?

Hi,
How come an e-ticket is cost effective ? for airlines. Doesn't it cost more to keep the entire IT system up and running at all times ? Doesn't it cost more to store huge amounts of data on computers ? I once read an article where it stated that a paper ticket costs around 2$ . But surely it must involve more cost and risk to relay on a computer system ? What do you guys think? What happens if the IT system where all e-ticket information is held fails or crashes and all stored info is lost ?

Firstly, the computer network systems are already in place, that is how tickets were sold for the last 10 years, the E-Ticket system is just an addition onto this system (such as SHARES or GALILEO). It must be cost effective otherwise the airlines would not be investing into the system. It helps reduce fraud and increases ticket flexability....

E-ticket cost are pennies on the dollar compared to actual physical tickets.

As far as computer/IT cost, those cost existed with paper tickets also. Your reservation and its details were still previously stored in computer systems for retrieval one you called the airline or came to the ticket counter to check in.

E-tickets are a win-win for both the consumer and airlines. The consumer no longer needs to worry about holding onto a physical ticket or potentially loosing it, while the airline has managed to reduce it distribution cost greatly via the use of simple e-tickets. E-tickets also benefit the consumer that changes can be made easily electronicaly without the previous need to also reissue or validate paper tickets.

This is all true.

The tricky part is when you have a full fare ticket with no restriction. If you need to have it endorsed to another airline, it is usually easier with a paper ticket, especially at times of irregular operations. I needed this year to switch a FRA-CDG segment ticketed in C from LH to AF. As it was issued by LH as an e-ticket, the AF check-in counter in FRA terminal told me I needed to ask for a printout from LH. So I went back to Terminal 1 via the Skytrain, asked for the printout from LH, and then it was back to Terminal 2 for check-in. As I had plenty of time, it was not a problem. If I had been on a tight schedule, well ... I do hope these issues get solved soon.

Given that I've been buying e-tickets on AA since 1996 and on TZ since 1997, I assume they are cost effective, otherwise I'm sure they would have eliminated it years ago..

also, look at many of the carriers who charge extra to buy a ticket on the phone....in other words, many want you to purchase an eticket...

it's worked out great for me!
