Denver Int'l (DEN): Not Much International Traffic

Denver Int'l currently gets only 1 non-stop trans-atlantic flight and that is on British Airways from and to London Gatwick (LGW). Does anyone know if any other foreign airlines will begin service? I heard Japan Airlines may begin service to Denver. I also heard that Lufthansa might come too. What about Air France? Denver Int'l (DEN) is the 10th busiest airport in the world and is right smack in the middle of the U.S. Denver Int'l is one of the leading airports in the world for connections. I'd say more international traffic to Denver would be helpful and profitable to the airlines. The British Airways flight is always full to capacity and they use there 747-400s!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd like to inform you that there is no gate space at Denver. All gates are occupied. United has the right of first refusal for all of the gates. That means they have first pick with gates if any new gates are built. Then gates are passed on down the line to other carriers. That means that United could take all the gates in theory. Denver International was the biggest mistake ever made by a city concerning airports. Denver Stapleton at least had room for expansion. DIA has a little harder time expanding, especially since the airport is losing money.

Just a quick note: Korean's service to Denver was not non-stop--it was one-stop service via either LAX or SFO-- and has since been discontinued because it was unprofitable. So much for "demand" for international services from Denver.

For international service it comes down to this simple fact, there are many other (better) places that are better to connect through. And the number of people that would benefit from the convenience of connecting via Denver is few and far between. And there is little O&D traffic internationally from Denver. The BA story may well be different, but then they intensively market using Gatwick as a connecting point for other cities in Europe.

I think DIA is the biggest bust there is, stapleton had a future and room for expansion, and they needed to do some remodeling but that was it. unlike DIA where there is no room for expansion. plus gatespace is at a true premium, everygate is occupied so that makes a difference too. and most foreign airlines find it easier to codeshare on the flights by connecting to AA,DL,AC,UA,NW,CO in MSP,DFW,ORD,DTW,IAH,PHX,JFK,EWR,LGA,YYZ,YVR,LAX,SFO,ATL,IAD and other us airports where as an example,JAL doesn't serve DEN but i am pretty sure that it codeshares with AA. and other airlines think it's better than to waste a slot for instance,DEN-IAD-CDG
instead of UA wasting a slot, they can combine DEN with another airport and both of the airports can combine to get the load factor needed for that flight.

I am not really a big fan of DIA either, but the runway arrangement has improved bad weather traffic capacity. The biggest problem with Stapleton was the lack of room needed to expand the runway system. Of course the real reason DIA was built was all politics, "you vote for our airport and I'll vote for your billion dollar project fellow senator". It was supposed to cost $3billion to build DIA, ended up costing $5billion. The crappy automated baggage system only works for outbound bags and now there are concerns about the train that connects the terminal to the concourses. They are considering building a tunnel between the terminal and concourse B, in case the train goes down again, which it will. There is a big issue over continuing the tunnel to C, United will only pay for its share of the tunnel to B and not C. We can thank ex-mayor Pena for this great airport in the middle of no where. When Stapleton closed there were direct flights to London with CO, it took three years to get the service back at DIA. Anyone know of any other direct international flights that Stapleton had? Oh yeah one more thing, the traveling public has really got a lot out of the new airport, really high fares on UA.

You got the high fares right, C172sb. To fly from DEN-COS, the cost is about $300 round trip(It is 72 miles/115km each way)! That is over $4/mile!

Frontier is the savior of that airport. Without them, you would have exorbidant fares to major population centers.

Well it seems like nobody likes the new Denver airport, can't blame them... it cost a fortune and except for Frontier's little operation, United controls (literally and figuratively) the place. Denver might be a good place for a Star Alliance carrier to fly to to connect to all of those United flights, but then like i said before there are better places to connect.

Try this out for size... why wouldn't Southwest enter the Denver market? They have the ability to make United compete, but the downside is that it could hurt Frontier... oh well.

I remember reading that SWA wouldn't fly to Denver because the airport charges were too high for their type of operation. And they prefer to use tertiary airports anyway!

If you understand the Southwest plan you know that they never directly complete with majors. This is not to say that the majors didn't start completing with them, ie Shuttle by United. I live in downtown Denver and without traffic it takes about 35mins, Stapleton was 15mins. I think the cab companies really like the new airport.
