I'm thinking of booking my next holiday to Bahrain after searching for the best deals and came up with the following.... what I want to know is whether the connecting time is sufficient to transfer onto the next flight to Bahrain. Also, if the itininary is ticketed on one ticket, will Bmi tag my luggage for Bahrain and issue me with boarding pass from Manchester ?

From:
MANCHESTER(MAN) operated by Bmi
Depart: 06:35
21/04/2006

To:
HEATHROW AIRPORT(LHR)
Terminal 1
Arrive: 07:40

From:
HEATHROW AIRPORT(LHR) Gulf Air
Terminal 3
Depart: 10:00
21/04/2006

To:
BAHRAIN INTL(BAH)
Arrive: 18:45

Thank You,
GF-A330

I thought BD had some form of relationship with GF, perhaps in terms of connections? If not, then 2 hours 20 minutes might be pushing it: you'd have to change terminals and the the queues for GF flights can be endless.

Just looked at GF website. The flights from MAN-LHR are codeshared with bmi (eg GF5283 which connects to GF2 with a 2:20 stopover at LHR)

Forgot to add that, if booked on one itinerary with the GF codeshare, all baggage should be checked through to BAH at MAN with boarding passes for the GF flight issued either at MAN or the Flight Connections Centre at LHR

So, theres no need to check in at GF in LHR. How long does transfer take from T1 to T3 ?

Not long - 5 mins from the FCC, IIRC. I think the transfer is by airside bus.

This website tells you all about it:

http://www.heathrowairport.com/porta...f1ae522010VgnVCM100000147e120a____

Connecting from Terminal 1 UK & Ireland to Terminal 3
Your connection will take approximately 50 minutes, from landing to departure gate. Walk to the Flight Connections Centre where you will need to present your ticket and then visit our airline desks before taking a coach to the departure gate at Terminal 3.

Check the menus on the left hand side

one thing to remember though, from MAN esp in early mornings there is a huge potential for delays. even a few minutes might make a difference.

I have done this trip several times. I have found that I make it and the bags do not. As GF has another flight later in the day the bags usually turn up. If your bags do go astray, fill in the forms at the GF desk airside (near the carousels). Also ask for some cash for out of pocket expenses. They usually do not bother offering cash unless you ask. I am fortunate that I go in Business class, but there is nothing for J class either.

BAH is a very pleasant island. If you fancy a trip to DOH, QR has some really cheap day-trip fares from BAH (I paid 27 BHD return and got to ride on a 321 and A300). Great service and a nice day out.

Note that you will need to buy an entry visa into BAH and DOH. If you come back to BAH note that you do not need to buy anopther visa. Also keep some BHD spare for the airport tax on departure. This has to be paid in cash on departure.

I usually stay at the Hilton or Radisson. They lay on a bus to collect you if you let them know in advance. Most hotels offer this. They do the same on departure.

Have a great time. I expect to be out there a couple of time this year.

At 06:35 I wouldn't say there was much potential for delay, especially in April when the night stopping aircraft is unlikely to be frozen. There are relatively few departures at this time and not too many arrivals for that matter. I would say this would be one of the better times to depart MAN, although even at the 10am departure peak you are unlikely to be delayed more than 20-30 minutes which is still plenty of time.

Billy...

I've not booked this flight yet, so which Bmi/GF flight would you recommend I take. I believe they have 3 departures to Bahrain on a Friday.

And thanks for the recommendation to visit DOH. I may look into that one, as I'll be spending a week in Bahrain. So, is 1 week enough to see Bahrain ?

I'm on a tight budget regarding the hotel so won't be staying in anything fancy. I've been looking at the 3* Al Safir hotel in Riffa. Any ideas if its good. I need something which is conveniently located to most of the attractions and is in the city centre.

Any advice will be great,
Regards

Riffa is nowhere near Manama (city centre) and well out in the sticks. Try for a hotel in the Exhibtion Road area, 100's to choose from.

GF deliver your baggage to you if it misses the connection, has happened to me quite a few times.

The BAH departure tax of BD3 is added to your ticket price now but the arrival visa will cost you BD5, make sure you have BD's or they give you a terrible exchange rate. They wont have any change either.

Lastly, watch out for the infamous Bahraini Taxi drivers, better known as Dick Turpin, they never switch the meter on and will rob you.........

One last tip...

If you baggage does make the connection it will hit the baggage belt long before you get through immigration and the porters will take it off the belt and stack all the cases on the floor. So have a good look around before you make any lost baggage claim .......

Thanks for the tips CV580freak...

Can anyone explain, although Bmi have a code share agreement with GF, why its working out much more expensive under one booking ? I did a search with lastminute.com and it came to £464 rtn for MAN-LHR-BAH.

Where as if I search both flights seperately through the airlines websites I'm saving myself about £70.
MAN-LHR-MAN £75 with Bmi and LHR-BAH-LHR £299 with Gulf Air. Which comes to £374 in total.

Any reasons why its cheaper. I don't understand.

Regards,
GF-A330

havent bmi's fare rules changed recently? i thought that bmi no longer checked baggage through if you bought tickets seperately and a cheap fare class. Can anyone confirm?
