Excellent, about time DL goes for that. UIO and GYE were 2 of many routes planned new service to in 1998, and nothing has happened in 7 years until now. It obviously fits in with DL's recent expansion, and also has the advantage that DL has finally some other longhaul flights that don't require 763s  Silly .

Do you mean 1 June 2006?

If this goes through, it really means excellent news!!! about time one has another option in Ecuador to fly to the US... Too bad no United or US Airways service, which still shows the lack of Star Alliance service to Ecuador. With this new flight, Skyteam will be more "even" to compete against Oneworld dominance in Ecuador.

Also, in the list of US-Ecuador service, you missed the following flight for Contiental

Continental Airlines
EWR-PTY-UIO-PTY-EWR 7x weekly (this flight used to be done via Bogota, now they changed the flight and is via Panama)

Can't wait till is official. It will be great to see DL 757 at UIO!!!

Sorry, pretty much like the CO service:

I personally prefer AA's schedule as they overnight and it's much less exhausting. The CO flight is not pleasant and the only plus for DL over this is that they're using a 757 instead of a 737.

Indeed, I did not list it, but only because CO is discontinuing EWR-PTY-UIO. Last flight is 24 January 2006. Doesn't look to be seasonal either.

It seems like Delta's int'l expansion plan is to copy Continental. A run down through Delta's current leadership team explains it. Big grin Heck, they are even copying the timetable!

Ecuadoreans usually don't travel light southbound.
There may not be a sizable ATL-Ecuador O/D traffic, but the connecting possibilities @ ATL would really make the flight worth it.
B757 to Ecuador, that's a goodone for DL...

ARRRRRRR..... Well, if it arrives at 9:00 this is about the time UIO fogs up, and they have to divert and come in next morning, so that would be the ONLY chance. Very bad schedule for spotters like me  Sad

Have fun on DL's 757's, quite possibly the WORST airplane for comfort that they have!!! DL's 757's have the worst pitch and no seat comfort, I've had many back aches from these on the flight from ATL-PHX. That middle seat is pure agony...they should be ashamed.

I didn't know CO was cutting down the EWR-PTY-UIO flight.. that's pretty sad, does anyone know why the cut?
Could it be bad loads? I always thought they did pretty good in their EWR flights, but I suppose it has gone down, especially with Copa flying to JFK..... I have to say this though, I did know that making the flight through PTY would not be a good idea, as CM has 2 daily flights between UIO and PTY, thus they wouldn't have much luck selling seats on the UIO-PTY segment... when they use to have the BOG-UIO-BOG segments, they did pretty good and now, they just cut the service to EWR all together.... how sad.
Any new information about this would be appreciated.

Good! I always wondered why DL did not serve Ecuador and thought that they would end up codesharing on AV´s flights to UIO and GYE....

I do remember that most DL 757 have very old interior, are there any plans to upgrade them?

Starting in May, they'll get the Song interior (and the Song planes will get the DL first class and wavy-gravy).

Apparently, you've never flown internationally on one of Delta's 757s. Foot rests and the move comfortable First Class I've ever felt. Great pitch on the FC seats, and the headrest almost felt like it was filled with gel, it was so soft and comfortable. I fell right to sleep on a 45 minute flight. Couldn't beat it. Delta's 757's to BOG, etc. have different configurations for First Class, so its not the standard Delta seat.

Actually, quite a few of them have been refurbished with the new interiors, i.e., all leather seating, new brighter cabins and lavs, new signage, etc. Flew on a bunch of 757s domestically over the holidays and all of them had the new interiors.

Yes, I love those 757s as well; unfortunately, there are only a few of them which they use only very occasionally on domestic flights. Looks like the new UIO/GYE flights will use these as the DOT application lists 22 F seats (which these few 75s are configured for)...as Otto said, great pitch and footrests to boot...

Oh wow, so the 757s to Ecuador more likely will be the "new" 757s from Delta (Song)? That would be just what AA, CO among others need to feel pressure on upgrading their international product... A 5 hour flight and no personal IFE, sure makes the flight feel long.... glad DL is making a good move and putting a good configuration to attract customers, because believe it or not, that will be a key feture to advertise and make folks swith over from other airlines in Ecuador....

Also, no one has mentioned as to why exactly CO stoped the service to UIO from EWR... could someone tells us what's going on? So far it looks that it will not even have a seasonal service, which is really weird.... Traffic didn't seem bad at all, but I could be wrong.

CO EWR-PTY-UIO flight arrived(s) PTY around 2200h; it doesn't fit into CM evenning hub hour and is delayed quite often.
UIO Airport is supposed to close 2400h; I supposed there have been times when that CO flight has to wait in PTY untill 0400 to depart to UIO, do a quick turn-around and return back to PTY-EWR.
CO Best EWR-Ecuador service would be a B757 EWR-UIO-GYE-EWR, arriving UIO either at 2200h (convenient connections from Europe @ EWR) or 0600h (for convenient connetions to Europe and Ecuadorean passengers going onto Cuenca by air from UIO or car from GYE).

How is applying for ATL-UIO coppying CO?

I also don't think DL is copying CO at all..... It's about time DL expands its service to Ecuador..... They are doing great in their ATL-BOG flight, and the next logical route for expansion in South America, should be Ecuador (since Argentina was awarded to CO).
If anything, Delta will be the best option for people traveling to the northeast, since from UIO you will only get Houston and Miami, as CO is shrinking their presence in Ecuador rather than strengthening, with their apparent suspension of the EWR-UIO flight... I am very glad to see DL going for Ecuador and I hope their service only gets better and they stay for lots of years to come!
