TUI Sells Coventry Airport

TUI announced today they have completed a deal to sell Coventry airport. They bought the airport just under two years ago, just before Thomsonfly.com started flights from CVT.

The new owners are a new company CAFCO Coventry, set up especially to buy the airport, as a joint venture between American holding company CAFCO and Irish Howards Holdings PLC.

The airport is business as usual, the new owners plan to proceed with the terminal plans and Thomsonfly.com are apparently comitted to CVT. PArt of me wonders whether there is a clause, i.e. TFly must operate for X amount of years? I also wonder how much TUI have made from the deal, they bought an airfield for £7million and have now sold an operational airport...

Perhaps they shoyuld concern themselves with their own airport rather than what everyone else is doing.

Homer: Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!

Very true. I don't think TUI ever planned to have the airport for long, in fact I don't think they ever planned owning it at all! They were in a bad situation, with only weeks before services started the owners at the time (Air Atlantique) still had not managed to put much of the needed infrastructure in place and had not followed proper planning regulations which upset the council. Air Atlantique were in over their head - not cut out for the job, and TUI had little choice. Still think they made a tidy sum though, not a bad investment at all!

Do you ever stop?

1) TUI have not been "woefully inadequate". Its called planning permission, and a very anal County Council. See you cant just throw up a passenger terminal. You need permission. And Warwick District Council have not been very co-operative with this. The airport had to fight to get what they've got now, the council made life has hard as possible for CVT. They tried to stop modifications to the runway, the car parks, as well was trying to stop them using the temporary terminal. Eventually TUI managed to start operations, and plans were submitted for the new terminal, and many studies submitted at the council's request. Then the planning permission was refused.

It will now be subject to a public enquiry, which starts next week. The worse thing is that, after being so difficult from the offset, Warwick District Council have now said they will NOT continue to oppose the airport plans (after wasting months, and thousands of tax payers money doing just that). The main opposer of the plans now is BHX, whoes case isn't that strong being financially motivated. CVT will win the inquiry, and finally plans can start rolling.

TUI have put a lot of work into CVT; having to fight the council at every stage, and against the odds have done very well considering what they had to work with. They essentially bought an airfield, and have sold an operational airport.

2) The services have been very succesful, some more than others but that is to be expected and overall TUI are happy. Don't read anything into TUI selling up. They never intended to own CVT for long, well, they never intended owning it at all. they were backed into a corner and had no choice but to take control. Airport management was never their intention.

I assume you have flown from CVT to be able to make such comments? I haven't, bit know a fair few who have, and all have been very impressed. Ok, its cosy, but the service has been very good and the airport is a breeze to use. I picked someone up the other week, I timed 7 minutes from aircraft landing to him being in my car - and he had checked baggage! Passengers like the personal service and its convinience.

It is worth mentioning that the Royal service was around for only 3 or 4 years. It was dropped because the people at Britannia Airways thought they were trying to be something they weren't, and it looked like they were copying scheduled carriers.

The 360 branding was very effective, it was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the European Design Annual Awards in 1999.

That said, Certain passengers did not like the introduction of the 360 service, they thought the British feel of the Airline was being lost.

Sausage and mash was a new 360 service meal introduced by Britannia when the 360 service was introduced, and this was part of many changes in Catering at the time, including offering roast beef on Sunday Inbound flights.

The levels of service have stayed as good as they always have been. The meals costed £10 each, and my Dad who paid for them even told me last night that they are "well worth the money".

It was a shame to see the Britannia name go completely all the same.
Still, time rolls on...

... And, no reply.

Anyway, on subject, I think this is good news for the Airport. Hopefully the plans the Airport's owners have will help the Airport get better and better and improve more and more. When I visited CVT early 2005, granted it was a small Airport, but it also looked like an efficient operation and a nice Airport to use.

Get in the real world!

Just because you may be use to travelling through airports with marble floors and glass fronted buildings, Coventry is how a Low Cost Airline/Airport should be.

It is exactly like Stockholm Skavsta and Gothenberg City (Save) Airports in Sweden that are basic but comfortable airports but provde all the basic needs for a Low Cost Carrier and their passengers to use.

Going back two years ago TUI would barely buy an airport and spend millions on new terminal for the airline they launched to possibly failed and created facilities that were sensible at the time and react to growth as and when it s required very similar to airports like Luton.
