While I will say that the "new" BA color scheme is original, I do not care for it. The old color scheme truly represented what they were. Now they are in a funk and have a 61% drop in the profits. While I highly doubt that this is due to the new color scheme I have a related story. The Boston Fire Department in the late 70's and early 80's was ordered to have their engines and trucks painted in a awful lime green color. Response time to fires drastically rose and the moral of the firemen was at an all time low. With a new mayor came a the order to return to the beautiful red and gold. Response times once again dropped and the moral rose greatly. As for VA's new color scheme, they are doing the opposite. They are going to have a large Union Jack on their tail and sell themselves as a British carrier. Now, I am an American and I respect VA for this decision to sell themselves as what they are. Whenever I saw BA's old scheme I respected it and the airline because of what it represented. Traditional British ideals. Conservative, proper, high-class, excellent "STERLING SERVICE". VA is also changing their livery in response to the fact that the majority of people choosing between VA and BA on routes can't stand the "Mulitcultural" tails. FYI. BA flight attendants were also told after the change in colors to change their attitudes and be more "loosy goosey and fun loving". WHERE IS THE BA THAT I FELL IN LOVE WITH?

I really don't know who are these people who claim to hate the new BA colours? Apparently 85% of foreigners (non-British) prefer them, 75% of British females and about the same number of British people under the age of 30 prefer them... Basically the new colours do not appeal to males of a select few nationalities (predominantly UK and US) over the age of 30, a few pilots and Mrs Thatcher. Also, please expand on why you don't think ATC like them (are you in aviation professionally?), and where you heard it - UA I can understand, those planes could disappear in darkness.
But please don't make everyone stay in the 70s, you may ask what happened to the BA you "fell in love with", what about what's happened to Britain? It's changed a lot and is a very vibrant, multi-cultural, diverse and integrated place, far more so than the US. Allow us our own, true identity, not one based on a fictitious and old-fashioned idea of what Britain was like a long time ago.

im just putting my 2 cents in....
as a commercial artist, and a planespotter, i have a love hate relationship with BAs new colors....
from a commercial artists perspective, the colors are ugly, most of the tails clash with the white body, and some hurt the eyes to look at. however, some tails work well, like the comcorde tail, and espically the chelsea rose design, which coincedentaly is and english design. i wouldnt mind seeing BA use it on all the planes....
from a spotters point of view, the BA colors are great, cause every plane is different, and that makes for great photos.
as far as VA goes...i didnt know they are getting a new color scheme....anyone know where i can see a pic of it?

I remember some years ago when BRANIFF came with something close to what BA is doeing now, they had diferent colours and if you ask someone from those times most of them will remember those "funny" planes. There is a joke about that when an Air Trafic Controller was on duty, he used to say to every BRANIFF plane:
" BRANIFF XXX what's your colour today?"
It's funny but it worked out during that time too!
Take care!

I was wondering where you got your numbers from? Also, the forum is not a debate on the multiculturalism of Britian compared to the United States. Other than that, have you heard about the new toned down color scheme?

The numbers admittedly come from BA themselves, who may be trying to put a brave face on (my own feelings on the subject aside) what is turning into a bit of a PR "situation". You're right about bringing social comparisons between the US and UK into it, I was still steaming from something in the interminable Boeing Vs Airbus debate, which said the rest of the world should "bow down to the red white and blue" (your red white and blue). Then he went on about saving us from Hitler (and therefore buy Boeing). Cheers for that, mystery contributor. What is this "toned-down" scheme? My heart is already sinking at the prospect.

I am not sure what the new toned down color scheme is, but BA did announce that they were working on one due to the feedback they got from customers on their multicultural tails. What I do know is that BA said they would keep their older colored aircraft flying on the North Atlantic because almost all of their trans-atlantic passengers who began their travel in the States hated the new color scheme. My own thoughts on the matter are that when anyone tries to portray everyone else they forget who they are. Never the less, I will be flying BA184 EWR-LHR on the 29th of this month. I will tell you whether or not the B747-400 has the new scheme or not.

I think that SOME of the new colors look great but most of them look really ugly. The old c/s was just so nice and so British. Can I find any pics of the new VA scheme anywhere?
