A couple of you have asked whether Viewpoint Park (the viewing area at the west end of Seattle's Sea-Tac Airport) is still open. I went down there today to have a look, and the good news is that it is still open, but for how much longer is uncertain. A sign posted at the entrance says the park is to be closed, but the Port of Seattle promises they will keep it open for as long as possible. No date has been set for its closure as of yet, although 30 days notice will be given before it does. The date, when known, will be posted at the park, alternatively it will also be posted on the Airport's website at http://www.portseattle.org. Right now, I know of no plans to relocate the park, and the way airports treat observation facilities in this day and age, I doubt it will happen.

If you're in the Seattle area, or plan to be here in the next couple of months, go down there and have a look. This may be your last chance.

I recently wrote an email to the public relations contact for the Port of Seattle about the view park and got the following reply:
"So far no decision has been made to replace Viewpoint Park after the third runway is complete, but it has been talked about. I'm glad to hear the park has given you hours of entertainment as it has so many others. Maybe you could check back with me in a few months. --Marlys St. Laurent"

I read from her response that there is hope for a future park. I suggest that all those who are intersted write her and let the Port know how you feel. The address is: st.laurent.m@portseattle.org

There's an excellent view from the park if you don't mind chain link fencing. The park is almost midfield with a good view of the entire airport.

To get there, go west on S. 154th avenue, following the northern parimeter of the field. Turn left on 12th ave. S. and go south for about a mile or so and the entrance is on your left (It's the only left turn you can make, you can't miss it.)

Just buy a cheap 2-foot ladder and you'll pretty much clear the top of the chain-link fence if you want to do some unobstructed photography.

Thanks a million for the info. I'm booking my flight first thing Monday morning for a visit in October (too bad I can't go any earlier). Hopefully it'll still be open by then.

I will be in Seattle at the end of the month. How far is the park from the terminal?

Viewpoint park is at the opposite end of the field from the passenger terminal, about 3 miles or so around the parimeter. You'll need a car to get there, as there are no buses along that route.
