I might have the opportunity to spend a week or so in the US sometime in March or early April and my top destination is Roswell, where a large number of aircraft I have never seen are stored. Having looked through the photo database, many shots appear to be taken up close to the aircraft, fairly recently. Can anyone advise me how best to view the many stored aircraft here, can access to the ramp be obtained (I'm airline staff with airside ID at Manchester UK) and how can the airfield be reached (other than by air with Mesa from Albequerque which seems very expensive)?

Any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.
About a 4 hour drive from ABQ or ELP would do the trick...just about the same from either place.
From ABQ, take I-40 eastbound, cut south on US Highway 54 (Tucumcari is the town where it meets up with I-40 IIRC), and then take US Highway 70 eastbound again. It will take you through Ruidoso, a beautiful mountain resort in the tall pines.
From ELP, take US Highway 54 northbound, and then take US Highway 70 eastbound (in Alamogordo). This route takes you through the White Sands Missile Range, and if you want to take about a 1 hour detour west (at US 70), you can also see White Sands national monument (it's fun to play on the White Sand, and watch F-117 stealth fighters from Holloman Air Force Base next door ). the US-70 routing through Alamogordo also takes you through Ruidoso en-route.
A rental car (Car hire as you Brit's call 'em ) would be the ideal way to reach ROW on the ground. The rental rates are pretty reasonable in this part of the world...
Hope this helps!
Brent

Quoting CoTXDFW777AA (Reply 2): I don't know about the airfield, but the town is a dump
My, my, a little judgemental, aren't we? As far as small towns in NM goes, Roswell is one of the better ones...there are some beautiful parts of Roswell, such as the area around NMMI, the New Mexico Military institute. Also, a fabulous restaraunt in that part of the world, The Cattle Baron (a chain in much of NM and West Texas), has it's headquarters there. I've eaten at the one in Roswell, definitely a treat every time!

I grew up in another shitty New Mexico town (Farmington), and let me tell ya - there ain't nothin' there. Suckville...flat and dusty. (At least we had the mountains close by up in FMN). Since you only have a week or so in the US, don't waist any of it in ROW...
On another note: New Mexico in general and Roswell being no exception has the 3rd or 4th highest crime rate in the U.S., including violent crime. Although I've never witnessed anything violent during my several visits, Roswell is the only place (other than once on Embassy Row in Washington, DC) I've had a rental car burglarized and another actually stolen from a hotel parking lot. The city centre is nothing to write home about, but I personally very much enjoy NM in general - it's one of our most spectacular States, and in particular the area from Roswell West through Lincoln County and up into the mountain resort of Ruiduso. If you are into UFO's, don't miss visiting the UFO museum in Roswell as well as Carlsbad Caverns (as someone already mentioned) about 90 miles South of Roswell - just make certain you check before you drive down when the last entry time and/or guided tour is for your day.
We are but a moment in this vast Universe and when gone we will never have existed.

My only memory of visiting Roswell, was going into a souveneir shop and coming out with a toilet seat with a snake fossilised in it. Gets some looks when guests use the dunny at home thats for sure.
