Has anyone heard anything about new planes or derivatives of current models lately?

Look for a 777-300ER sometime in the near future. Once Boeing introduces that, the U.S. carriers will start buying 777-300s.

Boeing should launch the MD-XX, MD-12, and MD-9*X. They would do well if someone would just give them a chance.

Look for the 717-100(80 seats) and 717-300(120 seats). AirTran and Boeing are studying this project.

Bombardier is developing a lengthened Dash 8, namely, Series 400. It will seat up to 70, i believe. And about the 777-300, it will be the longest commercial airliner ever built.

there is also the A340.500 which is an ultra long range A340 with new engines and a bit linger than the 300.
The A340.600: the biggest airbus, with new engines and wider and longer than the other models. Swissair has them on order to replace the 747's and MD11's

Also Embraer is to work on ERJ-170 (?) and Fairchild on 728 (?). All B737-500/A319/A318 clones...

Of coarse many frames are starting to roll-out. Boeing works on the 767-400 and I heard Airbus plans a variation on the 321's along with the A-3XX.

Note: someone mentioned something about the MD-12...this was previously planned by Boeing but it didn't really come out from the paper. They studied and found out it wasn't economically viable to buid such plane. It subbed by the 777.

Embraer is planning a new family of regionals. ERJ-170 and ERJ-190, as one family but will have some commonality with the previous family....avionics.etc.

It will be interesting the battle for the "jumboes" though in the near future....

I had read that the three major engine manufacturers were not too thrilled with committing to a higher thrust engine for this type. Has anyone heard anything to the contrary of late? It was either thrust or a wider diameter engine that would be necessary. I love that 777, but when I look at the wing flapping around in turbulence and I see that mother of an engine bouncing up and down my bladder goes limp.

I believe I heard that RR was thinking about making a 102000lb thrust Trent.
