As far as AI's short-term plans go, they will be leasing 6 A310s, 2 747-300s and 1 747-400 to increase capacity to Chicago and Japan. The A310s will probably be used to increase Singapore as well as to possibly operate some of the routes being operated by the IC codeshare right now.
Long term - the A340 is not likely at all. The most likely candidate is the 777-200 and my sources within AI tell me that an announcement to that effect may come as soon as Farnborough in a couple weeks.

Well, my sources tell me that the A340 may actually be ahead in the race, both technically and politically.
Technically: It may take AI years to acquire ETOPS cert. and the 777's fail on THAT count, and hence the A340's may be the preferred choice.
Politically too, after the nuclear tests by india, and US sanctions, AI may mostly go for the European Airbus models rather than Boeings.
Also both Air India and Indian Airlines have been very loyal Airbus customers. IC operates over 30 A320s and 11 A300s, while AI operates over 12 Airbuses already!
And IC is seriously considering the A330 as a A300 replacement
