i have JUST got back from the airport (hong kong chek lap kok) and i flew with China airlines (CI) from hong kong-kula lumpur-hong kong.
when i was thinking "china airlines" i was thinking oh no....and just moaning......but when i got on, it was just a normal aircraft a A300-600R with good up-to-date seats but no PTV's which was disapointing.
The inflight entertainment was excelent and the food, better than virgin atlantic and cathay pacific to be honest.
take-off and landing were performed extremely well, esspecially the landing.
on the way back i was looking forward to my journey. and i saw a 737-800!! it was confirmed to be a 737-800 on the plane and it was only 1 month old!!!!!!
the flight was even bettter than the first one, inflight entertainment was exelent once again.
Before this post about 14 days ago i swore never to fly with china airlines, but those flights certainly did not fail to impress me and i will most definitly love to fly with china airlines again.
People. They make an airline. www.cathaypacific.com

Glad you enjoyed the flights. I've read reports about how CI has been trying to improve. Heard the food is very good...
My mom would choose CI over BR in any case - she thinks CI has more class. The F/As at BR broadcasts in Taiwanese before Mandarin, and that annoys the hell out of her.
Just a small tidbit: my mom was flying from TPE-BKK on the day after the CI crash in 1998. The reservations people told her that they were pulling all A300s out of service temporarily, because everyone called to cancel flights after the crash. She flew anyway, and she said the plane - a big plane (744?) was virtually empty. I read that the feng shui of CI's headquarters in Taipei is bad...

Airbus_A340,......Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip with China Airlines. You might remember a posting of mine a while back telling you not to listen to the scaremongerers. We've got a saying here in England that says, "don't knock it 'til you try it."
I'll be definately using them again for my next visit to Asia

I have never tried them. I have heard that their service is really quite good, their flight attendants nice, and we all know their aircraft are new and well maintained.....but that doesn't seem to stop them crashing does it? Every year or two they crash. When I look for an airline I look at things like price, service, aircraft and safety record. I can sacrifice the first three to get on an airline, but not the fourth. CI have have the first three, but without the safety record, I would not fly them unless I had to.
No doubt anyone who survives one of their flights has many good things to say about it. How about the day you don't?
On an optimistic look, there was a complete management reshuffle last week including the CEO and President, so hopefully things will begin to look up.
