What Would Happen To SLC If DL And NW Merge

IF NW and DL were to merge... what would happen to SLC.

SLC has many marginal CRJ routes in the Dakotas and Wyoming. Would the airport lose traffic (would RAP need both DW (delwest) service to MSP and SLC for example)...

Against this, would delwest launch services to Asia, taking advantage of a Western hub?

Probably not much since NW doesn't have a true Western hub. What I think would be interesting is what would happen to MEM and CVG. But this is all speculation since this merger probably will never happen.

Nothing....

Now CVG is another story.

I would guess ATL DTW and SLC emerge as the true hubs.... JFK remains a major gateway/ minihub MSP is a strong focus city with CVG and MEM being lesser focus cities ( like AA/AE at RDU a couple years ago)

However, as previously stated.... it would be an absolute disaster on the fleet end. So many mis-matched fleet types would be discarded, you would probably loose the equivelant of a whole airline in the process.

Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Although unlikely, a DL/CO merger would work better. Delta has more fleet commonality with Continental than with Northwest, and the only hub issue would be CVG vs. CLE.

Fleet commonality aside, would that merger be approved? Seems to me there is a bit too much route overlap between DL and CO especially in the deep South. A NW and DL merger would have the opposite issue...fleets are much different, but the networks would mesh very well with NW powerful in the Midwest and DL strongest in the South.

A Delta/Continental merger has less hub overlap, however.

Hubs:
ATL (main hub)
IAH
EWR
SLC
CVG/CLE

Doubt it'd be that much of an issue, as the CVG hub is much more powerful than the CLE hub, and also relatively free of LoCo incursion.

Actually, there isnt much direct route overlap at all in the South between the two... but ever look at how they compete out of New York? THAT'D be the kicker.

If Delta and Continental were to merge, the JFK focus city IMO would be dropped in favor of the EWR hub.

That is true, and just the reason I don't think a NW/UA merger would happen. Three huge hubs at MSP, DTW and ORD is just a little too much Midwest monopoly for the government to stomach.

As for DL/CO...If they were to merge, am I correct to assume CVG would be reduced to mainly a focus city/RJ hub and CLE basically dissolved as either, because of its proximity to CVG which is in a better, more central location for a regional hub? I just can't see where CLE would fit in that new system with CVG in the mix and EWR handling the Northeast small-market connections.

It seems CLE is already somewhat the odd-hub-out in CO's operations already.

Would it also be feasible that SEA would become the primary CO/DL transpac hub? They both have good-sized ops here, and with all the international connects coming into SEA, I think it would do better as such an operation than SLC would. It would also help pave the way for a future CO/DL/AS merge....wouldn't that be some airline!

I think SEA would make a great international gateway for either DL, NW, or a combined company. The city has good O&D numbers, is the closest city in the lower 48 to Asia (meaning shorter flight times and fewer planes needed to operate certain routes, than say, Los Angeles), and either airline could add a few feeder flights, and rely on AS/QX to provide feed from other Western destinations. Hell, DL could probably start NRT/KIX/NGO right now using the 763 and make money on the route from O&D, AS/QX connections, and the limited feed that they already provide.
