If you could start an Airline in Europe, which would be your choice of Hub and why?

I would choose Prague as a hub. I think this city is in a strategic situation to be the gate to Eastern Europe and though I would have to compete with CSA Czech Airlines, I think this will not be as hard as competing with some other airlines in the region, especially those in Western Europe. The Czech Republic is growing fast, so I could develop a network according to the needs of the increasing number of business passengers, and moreover, I would take advantage of its touristic attractions, to get economy class passengers with promotional fares.

I think Prague is an excellent answer, is there room at the airport for an extra runway and a couple of new terminals? I would have said CDG at Paris cos it's so uncluttered and built to expand; trouble is that you'd have to deal with the French authorities (say no more). BA and Sabena were going to merge in the early 90s and form a hub at Brussels but the Belgians are so bureaucratic, Sabena lose millions of £s every year and there were union problems on an epic scale as well as the fact that Brussels National Airport is very congested. There, I've insulted the populations of some of Europe's greatest nations. What about Geneva, since Swissair moved nearly all their ops to Zurich? I also think Vienna is underutilised, I've flown in thee many times and think it's an excellent facility which is quiet most of the day. If I was BA I'd tighten the "pushes" at LGW cos Gatwick serves more US destinations than any other European airport.

I woul say Italy (better Milan Malpensa), as it is the only major European Country that desperately needs a great airline and a great airport. Even though we got a new airport like Malpensa , Alitalia is not big enough (especially in terms of Intercontinetal network) to meet the demand, and the alliance with KLM and Nw on the long run won't be successful because of the Italian bureaucracy. Trust me.
Consider that almost 80% of all Italian passengers are from the North of Italy
and that almost 80% of them still choose an international carrier for long haul destinations
Trust me, we are still short of airlines and, mostly, we don't really have a real hub yet, especially because no one likes to fly Alitalia

Helsinki-Vantaa! It's uncrowded and a third runway is under construction, so capacity wouldn't be a problem. It was just voted the best overall airport in an IATA survey for 1998 (was 2nd worldwide, 1st in Europe in 1997), and the categories it was lacking in were the number of connections, especially intercontinental ones. So if these were better, maybe after becoming a hub for another airline besides Finnair, then HEL would be perfect, no?

Anyway, the location isn't excellent Europe-wise, granted, but it sits right in the middle of North America and Asia, and now thet there's this dominating airline for those routes competition wouldn't hurt.

Munich would be a good hub. Only Deutsche BA to worry about with their very limited route structure! Munich's terminal is a very nice one, and to me it seems as if it is very well layed out. Munich is also in a semi-central part of the E. Continent...

Simple, London Stansted, they have tons of room, and can handle all planes, including 747-400s

What about oslo. They have a new airport there and no airline at all, considering SAS attitude towards Copenhagen. Oslo is in a good position, especially for the Baltic and Nordic areas, with good routes towards the States as well.
