Why were most early ERJ145's delivered without thrust reversers? Were they optional?

Yes, they are optional. Saves on weight on a very weight conscious airplane. I don't think it had anything to do with the earlier production models.

This question would be better fielded in Tech/Ops forums.

I suspect it also has little use for them - BACx operate into mainly major airports with runways that have plenty of space fo braking.

As said above, TR's are an optional item. First, the braking system on the EMB-145 are fantastic. The weight savings without the TR's is around 700lbs, which that far aft makes a difference. For the most part all of the non-T/R equipped aircraft were delivered new to European airlines, but a few have made there way on the secondary market to the US.
