FYI the last shorthaul / affordable services on the MD11 in Europe end Jan 30 when Varig's AMS-CDG flights become 777s. The sector can be booked direct with Varig on their site for £65 including tax, and I'll be doing it Sat Jan 28.

I'm not the biggest MD11 fan (compared to some of you) and I've flown it before, China Air Lines (in Mandarin livery) from AMS to Taipei via BKK and Helsinki to Kennedy and back on Finnair, but I don't think I'll get a chance to fly it again in the normal course of events and it's always sad to see a major airliner type disappear forever.

So there are still seats available on various dates, so book it up while you can. Maybe even see a few of you on the 28th. Peace!

I wouldn't be so sure... RG has a history of saying one route would be "permanently upgraded" to 777 service and a few months later, switch it back to MD-11. It's happened before.

What about CPH-LHR which is also operated by Varig MD11s?

I haven't heard anything about a equipment change there since Varig re-introduced the MD11 on that route last yearn from the 777.

I thought LHR to CPH changed to the 777 and stayed that way. It's reverted back to the Scud?! Huh. Hey ho, still looking forward to my day trip!

I can confirm LHR-CPH is still an Md-11.

Anyone know the price of a flight?

Scud huh? You might as well save your pence for a ride on the "sea cow" instead. The MD-11 just might be too much plane for you.  yes

I hope that they won't cancel the flight. Last weeks, several flights thought to be operated are just cancelled by RG for the CDG-AMS-CDG leg. The a/c stays longer on ground at CDG in these cases.
But if it flies, you'll get a very nice ride on a very powerful 'rocket'-MD11!
Enjoy it!

Eric

And AY still sometimes uses MD-11 from HEL to European holiday destinations like Malaga or Las Palmas.

In my opinion, from a passengers standpoint, the "Mighty Dawg" is a wonderful ride! Great power, large windows, great air conditioning system! It sure was a sad day here in ATL when DL retired theirs---glad I was able to get as many trips on them as I did!

Very true! I had the pleasure of flying twice on the MD-11 with LTU (the only thing that bothered me on my last MD-11 flight was the seat pitch, even for a relatively midsized 15 year old back then it was horrible). Sad to see RG axing CDG-AMS-CDG, but I'm sure there will be a handful of flights that will get an upgrade to an MD-11 for European domestic services since they'll still be around with KL and AY.

I Totally agree with You, because when RG had the 777 listed in their availability before RG used to fly many times MD11's instead. I do not think that the MD11 will disappear on the CDG-AMS-CDG route. RG is taking lots of Cargo on this Route.

Regards.

Yes they will do. Route now reduced from daily to only 3 times weekly schedule till end of this month. Last flight will be on Saturday 28th January.

Quoting Gigneil (Reply 16):

The MD11 flight was only/mainly used for cargo to/from AMS (e.g. cutflowers), because the demand on the Brazil-Netherlands route is very high! Pax figures between CDG-AMS and AMS-CDG were mainly beteen 15 and 50 passengers per flight only! That's why flying this flight is always like being on a rocket!

Quoting RicardoFG (Reply 18):

MP did last summer, but on charterflights only. For coming summer, there are no plans to bring the MD11 back in service on pax flights. From what I've heard, MP MD11s will stay in cargo configuration from now on,

How come? Is cargo demand really that big that they're doing the same thing they did with the 747-200Cs they have, or is PAX business not that great right now for MP that they don't need the extra capacity?

Martinair asked slots to Faro next IATA Summer 06 with MD-11, and 320.
