This morning my 6 year old son (an airline afficionado in training) and I spotted a QF B744 over Riverside at about 5K ft alt. A very beautiful, surprising and unusual siting at such low altitude. I followed it for a while as it maintained it's altitude and circled around toward Ontario, as I drove to work in Ontario which is about 20 miles west of Riverside. By the way I have a full view of the runway at ONT. I immediately jumped to http://www4.passur.com/ont.html at work to see what's going on. Sure enough, QF B744 from MML to LAX, but if you look it up at around 7:38 a.m it was decending towards ONT and at about 1800ft it dropped off the map, and disappeared. By the way if you start tracking it at around 7:32a.m you will see it over Riverside. I went to http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KONT and it's not listed as scheduled or arrived. I cannot confirm if it ever landed at ONT as I cannot see all the terminals from my office. I will drive over there at lunch to see if it's still there, but doubt it.
Anyone has any clue what QF was doing there?

Obviously one of our top secret Australian spy flights in preparation for the Australian invasion.

QF93 indeed diverted to ONT this morning. It was a tad on the foggy side at LAX.

Thanks LAXintl for the info. Do you know of any other airlines that were diverted to ONT today? It is a "Windex" day here in ONT, sunny, clear and no smog. Also, do you have any info as to when QF93 is scheduled to go to LAX?

Ok, so I gotta know...when a flight like this is diverted, do they let everyone off? Or do you sit there on the tarmac at ONT till the fog is lifted at LAX and then head over there....either way, thats gotta be insane after a 13-14 hour flight to have to go to ONT and sit there...

Well, ONT has an FIS, so they could process people there, though I am not sure if they would. It would definately be a slow process given that ONT normally processes 737s at the largest.

Looks like Jetblue 241 to LGB and Aloha 370 to SAN diverted there as well.

The regular early morning arrivals (all the Hawaii flights, LAN, Varig, Korean, Qantas from Sydney) made it in without a problem.
I suppose QF93 did not have much fuel to hang around.

As far as passengers, near always passengers are held on board until the aircraft can depart again. The only time they deplane would be if the flight gets cancelled and the plane is to remain at its diversion airport due to continued weather or crew issues for instance.
Also its not unheard of to bus passenger from ONT to LAX for customs clearance. This seems to occur maybe once or twice a year if heavy fog closes LAX in the evenings and ONT receives multiple international diversions.

Usually they take the passengers from ONT to LAX by bus, unless the stop is very brief.

Alright folks. I just witnessed the QF take off, followed by a VARIG MD11, just a couple of minutes ago. As to the QF flight, this had to have been at least a 3 hour delay. Both flights appeared "light", only because the take off was extremely quick and didn't even use half of the runway. So I imagine there were no passengers on board.

I also saw an A320 Mexicana take off earlier today, another apparent diversion.

This has been a very nice treat for me to see all those "unusual" airlines and aircraft at ONT. I just started working here 2 months ago, and as I said in my previous post, I have full view from my office of the runway at ONT, as our building is across from the airport.

I would agree. We have, on occasion, gotten international diversions because of IAH weather. Usually they will not process the pax here, but wait until they reach IAH.

Possible.....what's more likely is that there was a light fuel load. Even a full pax heavy jet gets off quick when there's a light fuel load.
