Hey folks.

I have SEVERAL questions about HP and Phoenix and such.

First of all, I am trying to get from east Texas to Anchorage, AK. March 30 and return April 2, actually.

So AmWest has this great fare right now... DFW-PHX-ANC... hundreds less than anyone else.

But they don't have a return flight on Sunday, just Monday. Grrr- missing school.

So here come the questions.

Can I earn US Dividend Miles just by putting in my US number when I make the reservation? I think so, but I thought I'd ask here just in case someone has more info.

Can I make a 42 minute connection in Phoenix between a DFW incoming and an ANC outgoing? How crazy is Phoenix?

If I wanted to buy the space-available upgrade to first on just the PHX-ANC leg, could I do that? How much does that cost? I see that they offer upgrades for $50, but it's by distance, and ANC is FAR.

Does anyone have any alternate suggestions? I'd rather earn my CO miles with SkyTeam, but CO wants $700 ish for tickets.... no bueno. NW and DL are similarly high. AS is close, but not quite.

Okay, that should do it for now.
Thanks in advance,
R

P.S.- how about AmWest in general? Are they currently in good with the a.net members, or in bad? They seem to cycle...

Yes you can earn Div miles on flights operated by HP.

Connecting at Sky Harbor is simple. Even though HP is spread over 4 concourses it is easy to get around. There are moving walkways between the concourses as well.

Space available FC upgrades are available.

If the price is right then I'd go with HP. The Buses have decent IFE and are fairly comfortable inside. All meals are buy-on-board, but from my recent trip they are a decent values. Sandwiches are $5.00.

COnnections in PHX on HP are relatively simple. I made a 20 min. connection (scheduled) there going SLC-PHX-SMF, but since the SLC CRJ was late by 8 minutes, my connection was cut shorter, but I still made it from the HPExpress gates to the far west side in under that time. The SMF flight was just boarding, my last flight on a 737-100.

Next trip: SLC-LAX-JFK-LAX-SLC on AA, gotta say goodbye to my beloved 762!

Yeah, and I just delved further into HP's somewhat less-than-ideal website, and upgrades on Alaska routes are a whopping $200. And there is NO scheduled meal service, even in first on these flights. There is on the Anchorage-LAS runs, but not the Phoenix runs.
And a trip report on this forum says that the upgrade was not worth the money.
So I'll skip the upgrade. When I thought it was $50, I figured I'd do it just for the seat. Nevermind.

Looks like I'll take the 257p flight out of Dallas. That gives me almost 4 hours in Phoenix, but I should still be able to make it to Dallas in time.

Any other ideas?

I am a pilot for America West and I looked up our schedule for that time period. It is odd, but all the ANC-PHX return flights are listed on the previous day - i.e. flights that leave at 1:30am April 2nd and land in PHX at around 8am on the 2nd are listed as being on the 1st. That said, we run our flights out of ANC 7 days a week, so any day should be available. That flight that gets in on the morning of the 2nd is still wide open. It should also be possible to connect in LAS on the return flight on the 2nd for a more reasonable schedule - leave ANC around 11am, LAS at 4pm and connect to DFW by that evening.

Let me know how it turns out, and PM me if you have any more questions.

Thanks for your reply, Hal; unfortunately, I booked my ticket to return on the 3rd a few hours ahead of you!!

I am sure it will be okay, although I just logged in to view my reservation, and all of my seat assignments now show **. What does that mean? I went to check on the flights, as buying a new ticket, and the seat maps are unavailable...

Unfortunately I'm not sure what the ** means. Since I travel non-rev when commuting to work and back I don't get an assigned seat and haven't had to find out how it works. That's the good/bad part of working for an airline - we get benefits like passes, but when people ask us a question about the reservations system we're usually in the dark. Have fun in ANC! It's a beautiful place even during 'breakup' in the spring.
