Hi,
I saw United has a flight operating non-stop Frankfurt to Hawaii flight 9853 today. Is this some type of charter? Military? Seems like a super long flight.

UAL9853 is one of a block of flight number reserved for military flying. Most probably rotating a Hawaii based unit from Iraq/Afghanistan.
CO a little while back had a 777 operate from Hawaii to Germany nonstop also.

I believe it's a military charter that originated in KWI.

Alex.

Now THAT's a long flight. How many hours would that be? 20h+?

Well if it was via EWR it would be 9 + 11 flight time, so I imagine the circle routing would be a little less depending on prevailing winds.

That's actually not too bad. I'm assuming that going over the top of the Earth rather than around the side (as a routing via EWR would be) cuts off a lot of flight time.
