With all those routes left over from Reno Air days, and newly announced routes on AA, it already seems like a "hublet". Flight to NRT already, rumors of LGW, and now possibly CDG? Those computer geeks must not want to travel up Highway 101 to SFO for their Int'l flights anymore!

AA more than likely is expanding from SJC because from buying reno-air and they are trying to compete with united's SFO hub. I would probably even think that there should be a SJC-aukland-SYD route! pretty soon or have a flight to honolulu that continues down to oceania.So I am not all that surprised about AA expanding out of SJC.

It seems to me that AA would be more interested in starting service from SJC to destinations in Mexico (Mexico City, Leon, Guadalajara, etc.), because of the high number of Mexican-Americans, and Mexican nationals that call the South Bay home.
Mexicana operates daily A320 flights to Guadalajara that are almost always full.
There is one thing that woudl prevent AA from developing SJC as a hub, and that's the fact that the airport only has a single runway.

A few things limit major AA expansion at SJC.
First of all the international arrivals facility is inadequate and was built as a temporary structure in the late 80's and the project to build a permanent facility is delayed.
Secondly gate space would be an issue. AA and Southwest are sharing about 15 gates in the new terminal and everyone else is still stuck in the terminal that was around when Ike was in office. As soon as the SJC people can develop a new terminal complex that would lessen the problem somewhat
Only one major runway, but runway 12L/30R is being extended so large aircraft can use it.
Plus the airport is majorly landlocked... so the long and short of it is that SJC could maybe support 80 daily departures from AA in an ideal situation.

SJC is really a mess to get in and out of, and now they've moved the rental cars 10 minutes away (assuming the traffic jams will suddenly vanish).
SJC's solution to their current parking problems is to raise parking prices, so that fewer people will be able to afford to park there. Gee...maybe they should finally build a parking structure over by terminal C, instead of the single level strip-mall style parking. Terminal A is very well used as it is, and Southwest gates are constantly filled and there are often "gate waits" there(not that that's unusual). And yes, the international facility is really a joke...nothing more than a smelly shack well away from the terminals.
Runway 30R is being expanded to accomidate larger jets, which is a help, although runway congestion isn't really a problem at this time. When I see that 777 for NRT take off at SJC, it uses all the runway there is, and naturally cannot do the normal loop over SJC to gain altitude with its fuel load, so it turns over the Bay, and comes over Palo Alto. I would be surprised if that plane could have taken off full on 30L on those near 110 degree days we had early in June.
