That sucks Dazed! Sorry! I went from SEA to HNL on a NW DC-10-30, and let me say, it wasnt the greatest. There were no air vents, no footrests, and the audio programming, as well as the quality, was comparable to gramma's vitrola. First off, the drop-down video screen did just that, dropped down, during takeoff and landing. It didnt really matter since the projector was also broken. After selling headphones they refunded passengers in my cabin because the movie couldnt be viewed. The entree was pretty nasty, but on the flight home, if it's a red eye, expect nothing but a plastic bag containing an apple and a tiny pita. I'm not kidding. The seats were hard, looked dirty, and probably were even dirtier. We had a rough landing that caused some of the overhead bins to drop open, and of course, the screen dropped. Now, thats a flight! Most likely, that was just my luck and those were rare circumstances. I hope you have better luck than I did, Dazed. Have a great time in the Aloha State.

The TriStar has the best safety record of any US-built jet transport. It's a great aircraft, very highly engineered. On the other hand I have a love for the DC10 for other reasons, it's a nicer aircraft for a pilot and much simpler as far as avionics and systems go (shame then that the MD11 had to be so complex and oblique in it's software and design). As for being a passenger, there is no difference between the two. I prefer the 747 over both though (in fact over any other flying machine). Sorry you're not going to get a ride in one this time (fingers crossed for a last-minute equipment sub).

The main differences in the DC-10 and L-1011 are that the DC-10 has larger windows, and the L-1011 has the coach section divided into three cabins while the DC-10 has two. I prefer the L-1011, but I also like the DC-10 very much.
