Does United have any intention of expanding again to Latin America? They seem to have added more routes to the Caribbean in recent years. Will there be a return to Santiago, Caracas, or Lima in the mix?

I don't think It'll be easy to get the rights for a IAD-CCS; Lately AA tried to get new flights into Venezuela and was turned down by Venezuelan Authorities; plus the situation with the Viaducto CCS makes matters worse for airlines in CSS rightnow.
IMHO, SCL wouldn't work from any of UA hubs, unless maybe something like LAX-SCL-EZE.
A B757/767 to LIM might work from IAD (most desirable and maybe Daily) or ORD (less desirable and only good for 3-4 per week).
IAD-BOG? Dont' know if the current U.S. - Colombia bilateral could allow it.
IAD-UIO-GYE-LAX? Ecuador is an interesting market, DL is getting there soon. Maybe something to think of.
Outside of UA financial problems, I think one of the major problem with a possible expanssion to Southamerica and the Caribbean is that UA hubs: IAD, ORD, DEN, LAX, SFO and focus airports (!?) JFK + SAT - lie to far north and west of the continent. Each new destination out of those cities should be studied carefully after the potential connecting traffic at UA hubs and not the O/D traffic.

SCL seems pretty well-served for a city of its size, with DL, LA, and AA providing a wide variety of service to their (and their partners') hubs and strong O&D markets. UA needed the combination of feed and O&D to make it work in MIA. The O&D base wouldn't be present at anywhere from which they would start service now.

My guess of a future UA route is IAD-GIG nonstop.
It would sounds likely to make the 2nd IAD-GRU into a IAD-GIG, no U.S. Airline flies non-stop from the Eastcoast to GIG.
The other option for UA flights to Brazil is to make the 2nd IAD-GRU to a LAX-GRU and then have from GRU on tag-onto GIG.

Remember UA is begining a code-share with TA sometime this year (I believe sometime over the summer). That will allow connecting passengers from LAX, SFO, ORD, and IAD to head to some places in Latin America -- and may be a sign of their strategy of code-sharing rather than sending their own metal.

So I guess Miami and Atlanta are suddently in the Midwest? American and Delta fly non-stop from Rio de Janeiro to both cities. They are the only non-stops between Rio and the US. No Brazilian airlines flies GIG-USA. Varig was to re-start MIA-GIG this winter, but instead decided to increase MIA-GRU to 2x daily.

They have been fliying 772's (A market I guess) to PTY every sunday from SFO, for charters during the snowbird season, maybe a 3 a week 757 from SFO could work for pty, PTY has no conections to SFO and CM does not have the equipment available to start the route. CM is very short on planes at the moment.

If UA is to offer immediate connections between PTY and the Far East in SFO or ORD, those flights could work, maybe not daily, but at least thrice weekly and for ORD-PTY-ORD not even a B757 or bigger are needed. Most of the business related PTY-Far East passengers have U.S. Visas and would endure going thru U.S. immigration and Customs and changing planes @ a UA hub.
When UA 1st started PTY from MIA, they had to their advantage the departure and arrival times in PTY and the fact that It was the choice for a lot of the PTY - Far East traffic, then they changed the hours, lost a lot of the PTY-MIA-PTY traffic and the numbers started to hurt.

I wonder if CM is thinking PTY-SFO or PTY-SJC. SJC seems to have a wealthy customer base with no service to Latinamerica/Caribbean except to México but it's SFO which has the flights to the Far East.
Talking about UA and PTY, IAD-PTY could work too - specially if fits UA afternoon hub hours (connections w/European flights), again, maybe not daily in low-season and - to keep dreaming - I guess PTY (via SJO) could support a once weekly DEN flight.
