12 July 2000
I made my longest set of flights last week! I was with my uncle, bound for Anchorage! We left IND on the 30th of June (UA 1261; B763). Our flight was to depart at 1.33p...but (of course) it didn't!!! It all start ed off with me waking at 6a so anxious to leave! My uncle met me at my house at 9.30a, and we left here about 10a. Got to the airport at 10.45a. We checked-in, and eventually moved on to the gate; it's about 12.15p now! We are both getting really excited about leaving! The 767 was due in at 12.41p. It got to be about about that time...we waited, and waited, and waited! As you can probably see...it's not getting off to a good start, but this is just the beginning!!! I went and looked at the arrival screen and it said 'will arrive 1.15p'. Nice guess UA!!! It finally arrived at 1.40 (an hour late)!!! Ohhh yeah...just a minor detail...United didn't tell us (the 244 pissed-off UA passengers) jack-$hit!!! We all just sat there wondering!!! OK OK, it's 2p...finally time to start boarding!!! YEAHHHH, or not!!! We were to be seated in 21F and 21G. They started with first-class...moved on to rows 35-42...we finally just got in line (remember this part, it will be come a big part later on)!!! All of a sudden there were no more passengers boarding...the whole back of the plane was full, and there we were sitting in row 21 all by ourselves! We lokked at each other and said we know there was more people out in the terminal that what is on here now!!! OK, now we sit on the plane for 15 minutes and a flight attendat comes back and tell us that they are having some kind of mechanical problem, and it's gonna be a while!!! Then we heard a couple of "bull-shits" etc.!!! After anoth 15 minutes or so...a couple of people from the back went up and asked how much longer it was going to be, and if we could get get off...all of a sudden we hear a loud screachy voice..."CHILLLL OOOOUUUT"!!!! Holy-$%*@!!!! That flight attendant just jumped there case in front of about 40-50 of us!!! Oh my!!! I've never so many people so pissed!!! Then one of the captains came back and told us it would be at least another hour, while they waited on a mechanic to show up!!! We were a little more respectful of him, because he was at least nice about it!!! By the way they claimed they didn;t have any cokes or water to serve us while we wait, another BS statement!!! All right, it's about 3.30p. They told all of us to move back to our original seats because more passengers will be boarding!!! We finally all get on here and we're ready to go!!! FINALLY!!! About 4p we lift-off!!! get into Chicago shortly later!!! I felt sorry for the people who had connecting flights!!! Thank god we didn't!!! We were "supposed to" stay at a Hampton Inn near the airport! We get our luggage, and move to a phone find-out how far away it was, and if they had a shuttle from ORD! My uncle calls them and hears something like this...lfdgh khmks mpkr ke dh dg ji e hdsekhp pg ir isjh ihis 0ih...obviously she didn't need to be the one answering the phone!!! HAHA!!! HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! We finally said $%^#-it!!! We just went to the HILTON and got a room, at last we're settled!!! It's sad but, we could have driven, and had less hassles, and made better time, too!!! We got up around and 5a, and got ready and checked-in for our flight to ANC (AS 135; B737-700). Wow!!! What a change...UA vs. AS!!! Our flight to ANC was on-time!!! We were to be seated in 10D and 10F. There were 119 seats filled...out of 120!!! You guessed it...the one open seat was 10E, the seat between us!!! Something finally went right for us!!! We got up in the air, and were give na menu saying "Good morning, and welcome aboard Alsak Airlines. We hope you enjoy our breakfast service while you are flying from Chicago to Anchorage. Bon Appetit! We had a choice of 'Apple crepes with a Blueberry Apple Compote and Grilled Reindeer Sausage or Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, Parmesan Cheese and Tomato, served with Rosemary Home-fried Potatoes. I confidently chose the eggs as my final answer!!! And boy was it ever good, it also had a cinnamon muffin with it! I had Minute Maid Orange Juice and Seattle's Best Coffee to drink!!! What was supposed to be a 7 hour flight seemed very short...we landed in ANC at 12.30p (AK ST)!!! It was a great flight!!! We were over 3,000+ miles away from home!!! A record for me!!! We spent the rest of Saturday unpacking and sleeping!!! I woke up around midnight, and looked outside...what the hell...it's still sunny!!! I knew about the long summer days up there, but I sure as hell didn't know they were that long!!! We enentually woke up about 4a. Whiched seemed like 7a to us (body-time)! Lokked outside...what the hell...it's still sunny!!! I got ready and we left the hotel at about 4.45a. We ventured back out to ANC Int'l that morning!!! And we had a hell of a time!!! We found this little point at the end of runway 14/32. (if any are farmiliar with the area...it is off Pt. Worzonof Rd. just West of Eathquake Park) We watched all the morning cargo flights come in from Europe and Asia; I would say at least 20 total (mostly 747's)!!! We saw Asiana, All Nippon, FedEx, JAL, Evergreen, Air China, China Airlines, UPS, and a few more!!! That was so much fun!!! They were lander right on top of our head!!! We spent the Monday driving up to Fairbanks, got there that evening, went to FAI as soon as we got there...because we wanted to turn our rent-a-car in there and fly back to ANC!!! But of course the didn't have Alamo at FAI!!! Damn!!! There is nothing to do, at all, in Fairbanks!!! I would never consider going back to FAI again!!! So we got a room, went to Taco Bell, and fell asleep!!! Woke up Tuesday morning and started our 400 mile journey all over again!!! At least Tuesday we could see Mt. McKinley!!! Coming up it was real cloudy and drizzly! We finally got back to ANC that afternoon!!! We ate at a place called Sea Galley, it was sooo goood!!! We just messed around W, TH, and F!!! We ate at Benihana's Wednesday, and Outback Thursday AND Friday!!! MMM!!! Our flight back to Chicago left ANC and 8.20p (AS 136; B737-700). We sat at the airport and ate dinner, and boarded on-time, and left on-time!!! Got up in the air and were given another menu welcoming us aboard and giving us another choice, this time I had BBQ chicken with rice and veggies along with a dinner roll and Coke to drink! We got into ORD on time (at around 5.30a (CST) after a rathyer bumpy flight!!! We were booked on UA 500 back to IND which was supposed to leave at 11.44a, well we were ready to get home; and didn't want to wait another 5 hours to get home!!! So when we checked in, we asked if there was an earlier flight...yes there was, UA 1172 B757! We had to take it!!! We were just drained!!! We'd never been on a United 757, so everything was cool! We've booked the 767 flights every time we've been in/out of IND on United!!! I Got home at around 10.30a, and fell right asleep!!!
I hope you're not sleeping now!!! Is this post record-in-length??? Sorry about that, but I'm not quite done yet!!!
Can't forget the report card...

Great report, ATA. There are some museums in Fairbanks (most notable is the University of Alaska @ Fairbanks museum), but I have to agree that its a pretty boring place, and I wouldn't recommend going there, unless you like bad hotels and mosquitoes.
Anchorage is a nice city, and I enjoy taking daytrips from there to Homer and Seward (via Alaska railroad). From Seward, I always enjoy taking marine excursions through the Kenai Fiords and Prince William Sound. I also like many of the beautiful places down south, (Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan).
Glad you enjoyed your flight...I'm hoping I may take that flight upgraded to First Class soon (free personal DVD players and cushy seats), but I'm sure coach will do. One question though...was there any kind of a snack service on either of the two flights a little before landing? Both flights are listed as having both a meal and a snack.

~ ORD-ANC ~ We were given a 3" sub...on the menu it says "Prior to our arrival, may we offer you a lunch snack: Turkey, Ham and Cheddar on a Fresh Roll. Good, but only lasted a couple bites!
~ ANC-ORD ~ We were given a 'fruit biscuit'...yuk! I took a bite and put it back in the package!!! I doubt anyone on the flight ate it!!! It tasted like flour on the outside, and just dough on the inside!!!
We drove down near Seward (on the Old Seward Highway) that Friday before we left, and saw some beautiful scenery!!!
I was looking on Continental's website, and they have a 737-800 flight from IND-SEA (stop in IAH) and change planes in SEA to another 737-800!!! Sounds interesting to me!!! The fare was not bad either...$737 (ironic price)!!!

I've been to Alaska several times and loved it. I've always had great service on Alaska Airlines. Their scrambled eggs were wonderful, and I don't usually even like scrambled eggs. I'm going back to Alaska on July 29th. I'll be using a NW frequent flyer award from RIC-ANC and back. While I'm there, I'm taking the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks, then I'm driving to Haines and back, returning from Fairbanks to Anchorage on one of Alaska's new 737-700s. I'm also flying round trip from Anchorage to Nome on Alaska 737-200s. I hope to fly on a couple of Reeve Electra flights. They have what is called the Lockheed Enthusiasts Fare, which is $100 to fly from ANC, completely around its route for the day, and back to ANC, staying on the plane the whole time. It's standby out of ANC, but the return is confirmed so that a person doesn't get stuck out in the Aleutians somewhere. I heard about this fare from a fellow forumite, and I e-mailed Reeve Aleutian and had it verified.
I enjoyed reading your trip report. I'll report on my trip when I get back.

Two of Reeve's Electras were first flown in 1959 and the other one in 1961. Reeve doesn't have scheduled flights into Barrow. I flew there a few years ago on an Alaska 737-200.
From RIC to ANC I am flying Northwest. These are the aircraft I am scheduled to fly on.
