LA Times: S.F. Airport Set For The Big One (A380)

SAN FRANCISCO — With ample seating in its spacious international terminal and six gates equipped for doubledecker jets, not to mention a fine selection of restaurants, this city's airport is ready for the massive 555-seat A380 airliner.

LAX has none of the above.

Well they have indeed finally begun construction work at TBIT having closed gate 101 to begin the redesigned gate configuration with double jetways to accommodate the A380.

I hope the article was left on the desk of every L.A. city council member. But in all honesty, comparing airline traffic to the movie industry in L.A. is a blatant scare tactic that isn't parallel. The O&D from L.A. is not going to move Canada, SFO, DEN, etc.

This is very misleading. In SFO, ALL international flights are out of the International terminal. In LAX, about 60% of the international flights are actually out of the international terminal. If you add the international terminal space in T2, T4, and T6, LAX by far has more gates, counters, ect. The only disadvantage in LAX is gate size and the shops and ect.

KaiTak: What is misleading about it? They are comparing the size of international terminals that will host the A380. None of the terminals at LAX other then TBIT will get the A380. Its not like they are comparing the amount of international traffic from these terminals. If they were, then that would be misleading. The fact is SFO has a new, large terminal able to accomadate the plane. LAX doesn't. But being here at LAX now I can see them trying to get ready. Unfortunalty many smaller airlines here at LAX will suffer for this cause of getting TBIT A380 capable.

SFO has been preparing for the A-380 since the construction of the international terminals (opened in 2000) began. The airport was well aware this aircraft was coming on line and therefore included it in the design.

My understanding, is that specifically international terminal G is supposed to be the one handling the A-380. While all the gates at the international have two boarding bridges, there are several gates at the far end of the terminal G which are capable of adding a third bridge for the A-380's upper deck, this too was included in the design. Because of the additional cost to add and maintain the third bridge, the airport is trying to get the airlines that will operate the A-380 (SQ for example) to SFO to pick up the bill.

All I was saying is the Airticle was comparing SFO's international terminal to LAX's "international terminal" (which in my opnion should not even be called an international terminal), which makes some people think they are comparing SFO's international Gates to LAX's international Gates.

Indeed the privately managed T-2 will be getting the A380 and is in the design phase to get either one or two of its gates A380 ready.

T-2, design phase. Till I see it happen, TBIT is the only one doing something. Now I am sure that T-2 will do somthing, but as you said its privatly managed which could either move it along or drag it along.
