KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines has won the "Best Airline To Asia" award in the 2006 Travel Weekly Globe Awards polls conducted by Travel Weekly, a United Kingdom (UK) based magazine.

The award was received by regional manager for UK and Europe, Lim Cheng Hoe on behalf of the national airline at a presentation ceremony held in London last weekend.

Managing director Idris Jala said the recognition by Travel Weekly was a testimony to the superiority of Malaysia Airlines' enhanced product and service standards that it have consistently delivered.

"Malaysia Airlines is no stranger to winning awards for its high quality products and services. We thank the readers of Travel Weekly and travel agents in the UK who voted us for this award," he said in a statement.

This year is the 29th Anniversary of the Travel Weekly Globes, the number one UK travel industry awards, which recognises excellence amongst travel industry suppliers.

Voting is entirely by travel agent readers of Travel Weekly and collated and audited by AC Nielsen, the travel industry's only official data analyst.

Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, currently operates 22 weekly flights between Malaysia and UK, linking Manchester and London with Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia as well as London with Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia.

Currently operating 111 aircraft, Malaysia Airlines' fleet is one of the world's youngest, flying more than 48,000 passengers to over 110 destinations across six continents everyday.

Malaysia Airlines holds a lengthy record of service and best practices excellence, having received more than 100 awards in the last 10 years, among others are the "World's Best Cabin Crew" by Skytrax UK consecutively from 2001 till 2004 and "5-star Airline" also by Skytrax, UK.

Looks like MH is giving SQ a run for its money. But MH is in serious financial trouble, having to sell off its headquarters building in Kuala Lumpur.

More like the corruption needs to be stopped, there is no reason for MH loosing money like it is. Their "fuel has gone up" lines are growing very thin...

i wonder if mh will ever win the conde nast number one airline, since that's the one that sq really cares about. most of our premium pax (read: our bread and butter) are conde nast readers/followers.

All these awards are always very subjective.

Maybe one day they will win it, if they get their act together. I find Conde Nast very UK centric in any case

Too many unknown travel magazines, too much money under the table, too many meaningless awards. OAG is the only one to be taken seriously.

I think 'bollox' is a better word.

They're ten-a-penny these days and if you look hard enough. I even saw Skyteam had won best alliance last week FFS !!!!.

In context to what SingaporeGirl was stating about Conde Nast being the only award SQ cared about, of course I know the award I posted is from the UK, I was merely stating that if Conde Nast is the only award they care about thats it's really UK centric, not Global. Just look at their domesitc awards.... BA??

conde nast is also a very strong 'brand name' publication for the affluent americans (aside for the affluent britsh) actually. in the end if you look at all the 'trunk routes' that we have, they tend to usually go to the us and the uk. and the premium pax for these flights (again read; our bread and butter) are usually conde nast readers/followers.

i have a question, is mh going to do another upgrade to their premium cabin once the a380s join their fleet? i understand that they have new premium cabins installed... the thing is, the flatbeds, the avod ife, etc, that they're recently offerings have been offered by sq pretty much since 1998. and we're going to do a major premium cabin installation by the end of this year, once our a380s and b773ers joining our fleet, and the rest of our a/c will also be upgraded as well.

I'm not sure they even actually care that much about that one these days to be honest. As I said, there is that many of these bloody things these days it's farcical. SQ apparently win over 100 'awards' from travel publications etc each year, which is also farcical, as deserved as they are undoubtedly are.

I would be surprised if they did to be honest, they haven't even finished the current upgrade. Having said that, they are not too happy with the new Business Class and it's not been getting great feedback apparently, so they may change that. The new F is going down well, but if the rumours of SQ's new F are right then they'll be way ahead again.

There are those questioning whether MH actually needs to but any A380's at the moment, paritcularly in their present financial position. They were apparently advised not to by numerous consultants, but political interference kicked in again. After all, they can't have those upstarts at the bottom of the peninsula upstaging them again can they ?. Big grin

i doubt mh will win the conde nast #1 so long as they are a step behind the likes of sq and cx, in terms of their premium cabins. their new j and f came in around 3 years after cx (not sure offhand about sq) and the aesthetics of mh's new j seat are pretty crappy, from what i've seen. all that plastic is so tacky  yuck . seeing as mh haven't yet completed their upgrade as sq prepare to launch the new a380 product, it's hard to see how they'll catch up any time soon. overall, i think sq and cx have a kind of classier image that appeals to premium pax. no sq vs mh rant, please  Wink
