A while ago, I remember seeing Delta's application for the JFK-KBP route. Did that ever go through? Is the route still planned? I don't remember hearing anything new about this ever since the application was filled. Does anyone have any idea on what's going on?

Very nice! I am happy to see DL doing more and more International service as they have a very nice product. Will be nice to see the PTV's arrive when that comes to pass.
On a side note, its this going to be a 763 or 764?

Will this entail any upgrades at KBP? The departure area is ok, but the rest of the airport is a joke. No seats, can't check-in until right before the flight, no real food or entertainment, taxi mafia, etc. Same as SVO on a smaller scale really.

Most definitely a 763. They are starting this route out with lower capacity, given that it is only 5 times a week. If it's successful, they'll try to step it up to daily, then a long ways in the future upgrade to a 764 if the demand is there.
DL will probably use the 764's for LGW/FRA/CDG/AMS once they are all reconfigured. In the meantime, they'll probably use them on routes with lots of Y demand and less J demand, until these planes get the BizE.

KBP isn't that bad; when was the last time you were there?
Yes, there are some overzealous cabbies, but there's a decent duty free/departures area, chekcing in only b4 flight is very annoying.. but hey. KBP is a lot better than SVO.
One carrier is'nt going ot change Kiev.
I can't wait for Delta to start selling tickets. UA attempted to appeal this application, based on Delta's replying to UA's appeal not on time, but failed.

Quoting UN_B732 (Reply 10): BTW: I'm getting L fares at $1300. This new flight will *NOT* be cheap. I'm sure fares will be corrected as we get closer to the inaugural.
Well, think about who is most likely to use the route - American business and government traffic, with maybe some VFR as well. DL is going to be able to command a price premium on this non-stop route as just about everyone else will make you go through Western Europe first.

I just came home from KBP, and can say that it isn't so bad. Actually, I like it better than SVO. But there is one MAJOR problem. Smoking is allowed in the departure hall. That is very bad, it is literally impossible to breathe. I was there during peak hours when all Europe/Asia flights were coming in and the departure hall was all filled with smoke! I think they should spend some money and make a smoking room. Otherwise, the airport seems very efficient. Even though the check-in area is smaller than in SVO it seems that KBP is less chaotic.

RJ,
the 764s will initially be used to Ireland, Manchester, London, and Rome this summer in a domestic two class configuaration that will be sold as all coach with the domestic first class seats given to full fare and elites. The planes are supposed to be reconfigured into Biz Elite after the summer.

Also to add...Kiev is planning to build a new airport. They have found a sponsor and have all teh money to do it. But the project has been idle for about 4 years now.

Do you know where they plan on building the airport? Their still doing some work at Borispol, although I have no clue of what their doing.

PS: I agree with you. KBP is not as chaotic as SVO. almost nothing (except for perhaps JFK) gets close to the chaos at SVO!

As I understand it DL has already signed a code share agreement with Aerosvit, and so Ukrainian route authority is likely just a formality. Aerosvit is already marketing connecting flights to other US cities from JFK on DL, and so they will likely cooperate on the transatlantic flights, letting VV use the two 767's they have more effectively on other routes. As for the airport, havent been there for a few years but I understand that Aerosvit is leading the way in building an expansion on to the existing terminal to include a liniar pier with bridged gates etc, part of a plan to build an entire new facility. THey have already started as I understand it and construction should be well on its way by now. THey have info on their website about the facility.
